bq20z65 Eval Software - Error with bqEASY

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ20Z65, BQEVSW

I have loaded and installed the Evaluation Software for the bq20z65.

I was able to simulate a pack connection, consisting of a supply with 1K resistors to the cell inputs, and I'm able to correctly read voltages temperatures, and currents.

I next tried the bqEASY tab.  When I finish item 2H, the software pops up a dialog box that says "Writing configuration data to flash...".  Shortly after that comes up I get another dialog box that says "Sorry, cannot configure dataflash without valid .encr file!"

I looked at the directory where I believe this should be, and find the file:  C;\Program Files\Texas Instruments\bq Evaluation Software\bq20z65R1_1_05.encr

I made sure that scanning is turned off.  I see no evidence of PF flags being set.  (I looked at the data flash using the "Data Flash" item, and all values read as zero.)

Also, when I try to use the <Help> <Contents> menu choice, nothing seems to happen.  No error, no contents, nothing!?

If I choose the <Help> <User Guide> menu item, I get an error:  "Error opening file C:\Program Files\Texas Instruments\bq Evaluation Software\Documentation\bqEVSW User Guide.pdf"

I've got version 1.05 of the software installed.  Are others having luck with this software?  Any ideas on what to try?

I've attached some screenshots in a word file, in case this might supply clues to anyone.

Thanks,    Brian

  • Update:

After looking over much of the forum, I came across a number of postings that suggest that many of the problems are because of SMBus communication issues.  With this in mind I decided to shorten the cable between the EV2300 and the bq20z65EVM.  This seems to fix the problem.

The cable I was using that was giving me problems was made by taking two cables shipped with several EVM2300's and soldering them back to back.  This results in a cable that is about 38" long.  This cable appears to cause communication problems.

When I shortend this cable to half that length, 19" long, the issues in the initial posting go away.  So... If you are having issues with the bqEasy software or EVM2300, even if they seem like they are not communication related, they may be.  They were in my case.

Hope this helps others sidestep this issue.
