TPS2590: PMIC of SOM Module is blown/damaged

Part Number: TPS2590
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2595, TPS25940

we are using LT8610AB during Power ON PMIC IC (DA9063 https://www.dialog-semiconductor.com/products/power-management/pmics/DA9063) get contaminated/blown.

The PMIC IC is part of Q7 SOM.

The Q7 Module (SOM) get the power from LT8610AB, 5V@3A Max.

During power on, without pressing the ON/OFF Switch, it causing huge damage to Q7 Module it has cost impact.

It is a Inconsistent failure.

We have identified adding a high current load switch (TPS2590) at the input of regulator would support us not reaching high current/voltage as input to the Q7 SOM.

Requesting your suggestion can we go ahead with the above selection.

Regards

Prabhu

  • Hi Prabhu,

    Welcome to e2e!

TPS2590 allows load currents between IFLT and ILIM for set timer duration. In case you want to limit the current to a certain threshold, say 3.5A or 4A, you can consider using TPS2595xx family of devices. TPS2595xx devices are the latest from TI and have size and cost advantage over TPS2590.

Consider using TPS259531, it has Over voltage clamp set at 5.7V and at Auto-retry feature.
  • Hi Praveen,
    Thanks for your quick response.
We require +15V as output, I have selected TPS259573DSG. Please suggest my selection. It is mentioned as programmable output voltage.

    Vin= Max 15V @ 4.3A
    Vout= 15V@3A

With the 15V output from Load switch can i derive the multiple voltage using regualtor.

Vin = 15V output from load switch

    Requlator 1: 5V

    Regulator2: 3.3V

    Regulator3: 1.8V

    Regulator4: 5.2V

    Regulator5: 5.4V

At high level, can i connect in parallel for regulator chain.

  • Hi Prabhu,

Yes you can drive any number of outputs as long as the total current is less than set current limit of TPS2595.

For example, if you set the current limit to 4.17A using a 487 Ohms RILM resistor as shown below, the maximum load current from TPS2595 can be 3.87A. For any current above 3.87A, TPS2595 can start limiting the current.

TPS259573 has an Overvoltage Lockout  feature which means that the Device would turn OFF once the input voltage goes above  the set value. Also remember that this part has Active Low enable.

In case you do not want Overvoltage Protection and require Active high Enable then you can consider using TPS259570/71.

  • Hi Prabhu,

Do you have any other questions? If not, can we close this thread ?
  • Hi Praveen,

    Thanks for the follow up.

Do you have  the functionality of Input OV/UV and OC protection. Resettable Fuse, Surge arrestor functionality and Reverse protection as  single chip solution?

    Regards

    Prabhu

  • Hi Prabhu,

Please have a look at TPS25940/42 family of devices. They support UVP, OVP, OCP and reverse current blocking.
Can you please elaborate on what exactly is Surge arrester functionality ?
