TPS53641: VIN_OV_FAULT_LIMIT issue.

Part Number: TPS53641
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CSD95372BQ5M

TPS53641 has VR_FAULT# asserted low.  the fusion shows  VIN_OV_FAULT_LIMIT (register 0x55) to be 15.000, with HEX value of 0x000F.

This is the only item that is different from a good working controller which shows VIN_OV_FAULT_LIMIT(register 0x55) to be 17.000, with HEX value of 0x0011

As a result of this failure the output voltage is at VBOOT value, and VOUT_MAX is at 3.04V (0x00FF).

Since I don't know what has caused this over voltage, I compared all pins voltages with the good working controller. The only difference that is see

is with pin TSEN (pin 40). the failing controller reads 0.833 volts, and the good controller reads 0.887 volt.

The input to TSEN is wire-AND of TAO output of two regulators(CSD95372BQ5M), as this controller  has two phases connected to these two regulators.

Would you please instruct as what could be the issue, and your recommendation on resolving it.

Note. FUSION shows the IMAX, value to be 55A, the same as good working board. I have checked all items listed in FUSION's General, Advanced, Device_info, and All config

to be the same as good working controller except the one mentioned above.

Thanks,

-jahan

  • Hi Jahan,
I don't quite understand your question, are you saying you see VIN_OV_FAULT in the GUI monitor tab? Even if VIN>VIN_OV_FAULT_LIMIT, controller not shutdown itself, it is not a latch-off fault.

If VOUT goes back to VBOOT, it is highly possibility that EN is toggled.

    Thanks.

  • Chasel,

Thanks for your reply.  I verified there is no toggle on En pin  to controller. I also compared Fusion result of this board with a good working board again. the difference I see is value of VIN_OV_FAULT_LIMIt (both in General tab, and in All Config tab).  In good board the value is 17.000V, and in failing board is 15.000V. Also in failing board, the Phase Control shows 1 phase, and 2 phase on different power ups. I verified all connectivities between regulators, and controller are for 2 phase.

Need to know how I can set VIN_OV_FAULT_LIMIT to 17.000V.

Need to know what could be the cause of controller sees 1 phase, and 2 phase at different power up.

    thanks,

    -jahan

  • Hi Jahan,

VIN_OV_FAULT_LIMIT is not an NVM bits, and the default setting is 15V. It is normal on '641 that you see 17V sometimes. I don't think it is related to your issue now.

Regarding the phase numbers, can you check if CSP3 or CSP2 is pulled up to 3.3V correctly?

    Thanks
    Chasel
  • Chasel,

Aside from VIN_OV_FAULT_LIMIT, all parameters in Fusion is exactly the same as good board except those related to VOUT_COMMAND that is

1.7V as expected. the output of controller stays at VBOOT (1.7V). I verified that using PMBUS, I can change output to 1.8V, but putting back to SVID, it, and power cycle, it goes back to 1.7V.

    IMAX is correct.

I have not seen 1 phase to issue today, as i see 2 phase showing in FUSION.

I have attached two files, one showing the FUSION result of this board, and the other is the FUSION result of a good passing board.  Please review and let me know of your suggestion as

what else do  you recommend to check?

    thanks,

  • Hi Jahan,

IMAX is correct, but it looks like CPU stop talk to VR, so please check if there is any sequencing issue from system side..

    Thanks

  • Chasel,

I would like to have your input on the case that I am working on. It is related to TPS53641, as 1-phase, controllering 1.05V regulator CSD95372BQ5M.  Using FUSION, I verified that i am getting SMBALERT# asserted,

and the following are different when comparing with a good working board:

    Failing board:    Vin has     MAX Y: 21   and MIN Y: 9.00      ,            -----------   Passing board: MAX Y:  21    and MIN Y: 8:00

    Failing board:   Iout has     MAX Y: 21  and MIN Y:  10.0                   -----------   Passing board: MAX Y: 21     and  MIN Y: 1.0

    Failing board:   Pout has    MAX Y: 5.0 and MIN Y: 1.0                      -----------   Passing board: MAX Y: 6.0    and  MIN Y: 1.0

    Failing board:   Temperature MAX Y: 144.0 and MIN Y: 23                -----------   Passing board: MAX Y: 144.0, and MIN Y: 26.0

What do  you think could be the cause of this?

    thanks and best regards,

    -jahan

  • Hi Jahan,

Can you help provide a snapshot of GUI?

    Thanks.
    Chasel
  • Chasel,

I forwarded the Gui. But this time, I don't see SMBALERT# showing asserted in GUI's Monitor section. However, I do see VR-HOT#, and VR_FAULT# are asserted.

    thanks and regards,

    -jahan
  • Hi Jahan,

Thanks for the snapshot, can you click start polling and send me the monitor page again?

From your statement, it looks controller meet over temperature fault and it leads to VR_HOT# and VR_FAULT# asserted, can you help use scope to check TSEN voltage?

Can you put 121kohm resistor to GND and close to TSEN pin to see if it help?

    Thanks

    Chasel
