BQ76PL455A: over 256 serial cells support

Part Number: BQ76PL455A
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO1050

bq76PL455A can supports max 16cells, and it can stack up to 16 devices.

So I think maximum supported cell number is 256. (16 cells x 16 devices)

If we want to monitor over 256 cells, is it possible to use bq76PL455A?

For example, can we use bq76PL455A as attached system block(similar with App note SLUA785 Fig 19) when we want support 386 cells?

Please let me know If you have recommended constitution and external peripheral devices.

  • Hi Kohei,

The limitation is for 16 devices stacked in series so if you use your mcu to communicate directly to 2x separate bq76pl455a devices and create essentially 2 separate stacks of devices than you can protect larger battery packs. It will be important to have isolation from the second device to the mcu if you go this route.

  • Taylor-san,

    Thank you for your reply.
From your answer, I understood bq76PL455A can support over 256 cells.

For isolation of MCU communication, would you tell me the recommended device part number?

In the App note SLUA785, there is ISO1050 as an isolator. And there are some CAN transceiver on the Multi-Drop communication Figure. Please let me know the recommended transceiver device.

  • Hi Kohei,

The only components that are recommended are the ones shown in the Use Case Scenarios app note here: www.ti.com/.../slua785.pdf. Other than that, it is up to the users preference.
