Hi everyone

I designed a flyback converter with Lm5022 by webench for switching frequency of 100khz . the core material that webench suggest is TP4A and I designed another flyback with the same specification but with Lm3481 for this design webench suggest N49 core material. I want to know why it chose these core material. on what basis should we choose the core material?

Dear Sir,
It mainly depend on your switching frequency. for the 100kHz frequency, many ferrite cores fit for your application.
You can check the N49 and TP4A frequency curve and loss curve to make a decision. Generally, both OK!

thank you so much for your help.

If we choose wrong core material for example our switching frequency is low but we use a core material that is better to use for high frequency,
in this case what will happen?

And in both DCM and CCM mode should we just consider frequency and core loss?

Dear Sir,
What kind of core material you chosen? It is depend on its Bmax and the loss. If the Bmax is OK, then everything will be OK! Is it still a ferrite core?

yes ferrite core, for example frequency range of 3D3 core material is 0.2-2 Mhz . I want to know if I use this core for a converter with lower switching frequency than this range what will happen?

Dear Sir,

Generally it should be OK for the 100kHz operation. But a 0.2M-2MHz core is much much expensive than a 50k-300kHz core. And you need to care about the Bmax(Bat) curve and the loss curve.

by the, could you please attached this core datasheet?

I have another question, I have a core that it doesn't have part number, is there any way to recognize core material with experiment?

Dear Sir,

This core is OK for the 100kHz operation. But it may expensive. And please be noted that its Bmax@T=100C is only 310mT. You need to make sure it will not exceed this limit during the real application.

Its hard to identify the core manufacture since most of them has similar shape.
