BQ24610: Gate resistor needed ?

Part Number: BQ24610

Hello TI forum,

I am working on BQ24610 and we can notice that in application circuit and EVM schematic there is no use of gate series resistor.

No resistor leads to higher termal dissipation for the internal driver and high di/dt increased EM emission. Can you confirm that these effects are under control ?

Thank you !

Best regards,

Samir

  • Hi Samir,

Adding a gate resistor, decreases the switching speed of a MOSFET. This results in an increase in power loss (increased switching loss), a reduction in performance, potential heat issues and an overall decrease in efficiency which is why it is not included. In the EVM we do provide a 0-ohm resistor footprint (R17 in EVM user guide schematic) for customers to include this gate resistor in testing if EMI is of a greater concern than efficiency (case-by-case basis). To determine whether EMI is enough depends on the application, and should be verified by the engineer (take into account tradeoffs) as well, to determine if adding gate resistor or snubber circuit is required.
