BQ25713: chose BQ25713 or BQ24773 or other

Part Number: BQ25713
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24773

I want to choose a battery charging chip, my requirements are:

Input voltage:DC12V

Max recharging current:5A

battery:3S 18650 cell

voltage of battery package:11.1A

I2C Communication

Overcurrent protection

I find both BQ25713 and  BQ24773   meet the requirements.

My question is:if I use the BQ24773,should I  increase an extra boost circuit at input port?

Which is the better  solution:BQ25713 or BQ24773 with a boost IC,or other IC?

  • Hi,

I'm assuming that 11.1 V is only the nominal voltage for the battery (3.7 V/cell). However, the charge voltage is probably around 12.6 V (4.2 V/cell).

The BQ24773 is only a buck charger. Since the charge voltage is higher than the 12 V input voltage, you would need to step up the input voltage in order to charge your 3-cell battery.

Instead, I would recommend the BQ25713, which is a buck-boost charger. The BQ25713 would allow for a more integrated solution since you will not need to add a boost converter at the input.

    Best regards,

    Angelo
