BQ24005: Heating issue while charging

Part Number: BQ24005

Hi,

I have designed a Li-ion battery charging circuit using the BQ24005. But the IC is heating while the battery is charging (No heating observed while discharging)

I have set a charging current of 1A  and I  used a 7.4V, 12Ah (2S5P) Li-ion battery

While measuring input (IN1,IN2) showing 9.1V

See the schematic portion and the thermal pad connections of the IC (1st and 2nd layers)

Kindly suggest a solution for this problem

Thanks in advance..

  • Hello

The power dissipation on the device will be high and you will see heating on the device.  Try reducing the charge current to see if this will improve thermal rise.  With 1A charge current and a 3V input to output voltage difference the power dissipation is 3W.
