Hi Bogey8,
For example, you have 9 devices and you may have following requirements concerning lighting patterns control.
1. Each device can be controlled independently for different lightning effects;
2. Nine devices are divided into three groups, each group is composed of three devices and has the same lighting pattern;
3. Nine devices can be controlled at the same time.
In order to meet the above requirements at the same time, you may set different device address by using 4 hardware A0~A3 address for independent control of each device(corresponding to requirement 1). Besides, you may use sub address to achieve requirement 2. What's more, a group address is needed to achieve overall control of all devices(corresponding to requirement 3). Hence, the group address, sub address along with hardware address provide capability of more flexible and complicated control.
