TPS50601A-SP: POL Converter Solution Size

I'm looking to use TPS50601A-SP as a POL converter to generate 1.2V, 2A output power from 5V input voltage. Based on the various references designs and eval board documentation I've come across, it seems like the smallest solution size using this device is about 0.8 to 1 in^2.

I'm wondering if it's possible to get the solution size under 0.5 in^2 or if there are any other recommendations for a rad-hard power solution that can provide the smallest solution size.

Please see reference design for the predecessor of the TPS50601A-SP in which a 1.2 x 1.3inch EVM has been achieved. The same for the A version of the device has been built but the documentation hasn't been published yet. A smaller footprint could potentially be realized by using both sides of the board.

Hi Christian,

Thank you for your response. The PMP8904 reference design was what I was basing my initial estimate of 0.8 to 1 sq inches.

Any recommendations for generating an isolated output of 15V, 0.2A from 28V input using one of TI's space product devices? Solution size needs to be 1 sq inch or less.

Hey Jim,

That size sounds impossible to me, but perhaps you will have better luck than I.

My suggestion would be a non-synchronous flyback using the UC1843B-SP.
