Hi,
I'm looking for a solution to charge a small single LiFePO4 battery from a solar panel.
(Batteries capacities 700mAh - 32000mAh, solar panel 6V)
Is there any TI product I can use?
Is there any TI fuel gauge suitable for the application?

Hello Jan,
What is the series cell count for this application? We should have a gauge that works with your system, but depending on the cell count we can provide the best option.
Sincerely,
Wyatt Keller
Hi Jan,
If this is a 1S application, please consider BQ27z561-R1 for this design. If 1-4S, please consider BQ40z50-R2.
Thanks,
Rushi
Thanks Rushi,
It's 1S application, but the datashet says that BQ27z561-R1 supports Li-ion batteries, not LiFePO4

Hi Wyatt,
I'm looking for a solution to charge a small single LiFePO4 battery from a solar panel.
Anything available?
Jan
Hi Jan,
This gauge is targeted for li-ion/lipo packs. However, we do have support through FW for LFP batteries as well as referenced in our technical reference manual: https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/sluuc54b/sluuc54b.pdf
Please refer to section 4.9 [LFP_RELAX] register.
Thanks,
Rushi
Hi Rushi,
Thanks, I will have a look at it.
How about the charger IC? Any solution here?
Is there a combination of a solar energy harvester plus non solar LiFePO4 charger?
Cheers,
Jan
Hi Jan,
The charger IC is handled by a different team. I will have one of their experts make a recommendation for you.
Thanks,
Rushi
Hi Jan,
Is the solar panel 6V OCV or close to the MPPT operating voltage? How much charging current is in your design?
Hi Jan,
The solar pane Open Circuit Voltage is 7.7V and the Peak ower Voltage is about 6.5V. You can use BQ25896 or BQ25895 and set the VINDPM at 6.5V.
Hi Jan,
Please check out the BQ24650. It is a charger controller and requires MOSFET. The schematic check list is here: https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management/f/196/t/791790
I forgot that the minimum battery voltage is 3.84V for BQ2589x.
Hi Jan,
A voltage loop is needed to control the input voltage (solar panel output volatge) at the peak power. You can set the VINDPM at 6.5V for the charger. I could not find such control loop in the DC-DC converter.
