BQ34Z100-G1: Minimum configuration required for LION

Part Number: BQ34Z100-G1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34Z100, GPCCHEM, BQSTUDIO

I am trying to use bq34z100-G1 as fuel gauge for  5SP3 configuration battery pack.

bq34z100-G1 will be part of system with I2C interface.

I could interface to host controller using bq34z100 Evaluation Module (EVM) and read default values

Planned battery pack is 5SP3 configuration rechargeable Li-ion 18.5V battery pack with LiCoO2 cathode and graphitised carbon anode

Nominal Voltage: 18.5V

Rated Capacity: 7.2Ah

Configuration: 5S3P, Li-ion 3.7V 2.4Ah

Max Charging Current: 2A(Recommended)

Max. Discharge Current: Depends on load

Continuous discharging current Depends on load

Cycle Life: 700+ Cycle

Can I use LION on chem ID for this battery pack

I am planning following configuration

  1. CC Threshold = 6480mAh
  2. Cell Terminate voltage –The minimum voltage where your system shuts down. -15000mV
  3. Design capacity =7200mAh (Capacity in mAh of one of your cells) * number of cells
  4. Design energy = 23040mWh = design capacity * (nominal voltage of one of your cells in mV)
  5. Design Energy Scale : 1
  6. taper current -100mA
  7. Flash Update OK Cell Volt -2800mV
  8. Cell Taper Voltage – 100mv
  9. Numbers of series cell – 5
  10. Min Taper capacity -0.25mAh
  11. Cell Charge Voltage T1-T2 – 2400mV
  12. Cell Charge Voltage T2-T3-2400mV
  13. Cell Charge Voltage T3-T4-2400mv
  14. Cell Term V Delta – 100mV

Am I am going in right direction ?

  • There is a detailed design procedure mentioned in the bq34z100 datasheet. I would suggest you follow the procedure to have all the necessary configurations done.
Have you decided which chemistry id to use? If not, I would suggest you use the GPCCHEM ( https://www.ti.com/tool/GPCCHEM) to find the best matching id. In addition, to program a chemistry id into the gauge device, you must use bqStudio.
