TLV700: peak current in the operation

Part Number: TLV700

Dear Specialists,

My customer is using TLV70033 and has a question.

I would be grateful if you could advise.

---

When the 3.3V output voltage and output current were examined on the board on which TI's TLV70033DCKT was mounted, it was found that the peak current exceeded the limit value for a moment.

Could you please see the waveform data measured in our company.

Is the TLV70033DCKT damaged at such an output current?

Although it exceeds the current limit, the time is very short (tens of μs at start up), so it is considered that there is no problem from the viewpoint of heat.

This circuit has been used in our products and is operating normally.

I appreciate your great help in advance.

  • Hi Shinichi,

The wire bond for the TLV700 in the DCK package (SC70) has a fusing current of approximately 2A. So if the device is working in the application then the 1.16A shouldn't be a concern from a fusing current point of view however I do not have a way to evaluate the effects of repetitive nature and the customer will need to evaluate their application accordingly.

Just to note this spike in current happens before the current limit circuit has time to respond (most LDO current limits have a response time of 20us-100us) which is why they see current above the current limit.

  • Hi Kyle,

    Thank you for your reply.

I understand it should be no problem at the current rate of wire bonding and it's not evaluated repetitive over current pulse.

I'll share this information with the customer and suggest consideration.

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regars,

  • Hi Kyle,

The customer has begun to consider whether the TLV700 can be used.

They have some questions, could you please advise.

    ---

    (Q1)
As shown in TLV70033 peak current operation.pdf (Page2) attached to previous post,

the measurement result of 3.3V Output Current of Steady state is 48.7mA avg and 225mA rms.

According to the TLV700 data sheet,

Recommended Operating Conditions: IOUT MAX 200mA.

From the measurement result, avg is fully satisfied, but rms is slightly exceeded.

Which is the Recommended Operating Conditions, avg or rms?

    (Q2)
Under the conditions of 48.7mA avg and 225mA rms of the measurement result

At that time, the surface saturation temperature of TLV70033 is as low as 52.4 ℃ (Ta:25℃)

    (TLV70033 peak current operation.pdf of Page4).

Is there possibility of TLV70033DCKT break down?

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

  • Hi Shinichi,

See my answers to your questions below.

    Q1

The RMS value is probably more applicable here due to the very large spike in current however note that the device will provide more than the max value in the ROC table however that is the value for specified parameters in the EC table (accuracy, dropout, ground current, etc...). Naturally at higher currents the dropout will be higher the accuracy will be worse, etc... so the customer needs to evaluate if the performance of the device will meet their requirements. If they want the EC table parameters to apply to their application use case, they will need an LDO with a much larger output current rating (their scope shots show 1.16A so they would need an LDO specified for >=1.16A).

    Q2

Using the Junction-to-top characterization parameter for the DCK package that allows us to estimate that the junction temperature is close to 50C which is not a concern from a lifetime point of view (JEDEC spec assumes ~9 year lifetime for ICs at 55C).

  • Hi Kyle,

    Thank you for your reply,

I'll share your answer with the customer.

If they have an additional question, I cousult you again.

    I appreciate your great help.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi
