TPS7B7702-Q1: current limit setting above 300mA

Part Number: TPS7B7702-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS7B7702

Hi team,

My customer has two questions about the current limit and they know our datasheet has spec of internal current limit min 340mA.

And in their current application, their current will be up to max of 320mA.

Questions1: Could they not use any current limit for the ILIM pin? for example, ILIM short to GND? what's the risk?

By the way, our current limit test condition has the LIMx shorted to GND. Does it mean we could also do the same on the application?

Question2: Could  they set the current limit of TPS7B7702 above 300mA? what's the potential risk?

Thanks.

James

  • Hi James,

Questions1: Could they not use any current limit for the ILIM pin? for example, ILIM short to GND? what's the risk?

You could connect LIMx to GND to use internal current limit values from 340mA to 550mA. There is no risk of doing this but please note, the LDO is not designed to run at the current limit (>300mA) constantly and this LDO is rated for 300mA.

Question2: Could they set the current limit of TPS7B7702 above 300mA? what's the potential risk?

Considering the internal current limit could be as low as 340mA, and the current limiting accuracy could vary by 8% when sitting with a resistor, it does not make much sense to set the current limit between 300mA to 340mA. Again, constantly running the LDO near/in the current limit may reduce the reliability of the device.
