AM6442: power consumption summary?

Part Number: AM6442
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA226

Team,

I found the power consumption EXCEL file at:
https://www.ti.com/product/AM6442#design-development##design-tools-simulation

-Do we plan to add PCIe as well in the EXCEL tool?

-I assume the the AM64xx GP EVM includes provision to measure the different power rails. Correct?
Can the power consumption by read on Cortex A53 via Linux? Or do you need external equipments?

-Do we document the power consumption for the different video (like OoB Benchmark demo here, decentralized multiaxis demo here) we provide as part of the Linux SDK?
It would be interesting to have detailed power figures for a demo and "translate" it into the EXCEL tool so that it gives a know proven starting point.

Thanks in advance!

A.

  • Hi AnBer,

PCIe is a feature of the tool. On the Summary Tab, look at cell F22 for a drop down selection of "High Speed IO" options and PCIe Gen 1 & 2 should be there.

On the AM64 GPEVM there are INAs populated on several of the VDD rails to measure precise power. I conduct this with an external MSP430 launch pad that runs a simple RTOS and interfaces with the GPEVM via a ribbon cable. In theory you could use Linux running on the A53 and could probe the i2c busses for the INA measurements, but of course running Linux will add to the power measurements.

We do not document the power consumption as a function of different resolutions, as AM64 does not have a video output ports. Are there specific use cases in mind you are investigating?

    Regards,

    Colin

  • Hi Colin,

    Thanks for the answer.

-Sorry for the last question I meant :"Do we document the power consumption for the different demos"?
In older AM335x SDK we used to provide power consumption benchmarks for some demos/use case. Is it planned as well for AM64xx SDK?

-I have just seen that a AM3358 Beaglebone black SW package is available to measure the AM64xx power consumption over I2C:
           Linux Powertool for INA226
The power consumption topic (measuring it for a specific use case using the INAs) could be a good topic for the monthly Sitara call:

  • Thank you for the feedback, AnBer. I will communicate this with my leadership. Unfortunately I am not sure where this would fall in the priority list with our thin resources, in the near future.

  • And to answer your last question more directly - is there a particular demo that you were interested in for power measurements? We have PET simulations of different use cases compared to bench measurements of various benchmarking tests (dhrystone, memtester, etc.) but not a particular HLOS demo.
