Hi,

We are planning to use the AM6442 processor from the Sitara series in our design which should support 1G Ethernet and the different industrial Ethernet protocols such as Ethernet I/P, Ether CAT, PROFINet etc. I got some documents about this from this link. In these documents, the Ethernet PHY DP83822 is recommended, which is a 10/100 Ethernet PHY, for implementing these protocols. We have purchased the evaluation board for the AM64x series TMDS64GPEVM. The PHY used in that design is DP83869HMRGZT, which supports 1G Ethernet. So, is it possible to implement the above-mentioned protocols using this PHY, or DP83822 is required? Is it possible to test these protocols using the Evaluation board?

Hi Biju,

Both PHYs can support the industrial protocols enabled in MCU+ SDK. As you mentioned, DP83822 is 10/100Mbps so suitable for 100M industrial protocols. TI EVM uses DP83869 as it supports 1G in addition to 10/100Mbps enabling us additional features testing.

Btw, can you please let us know where in the documentation DP83822 is recommended?

Hi Prasad,

Thanks for confirming this. I have one more question, is there actually a PHY dependency for the Sitara series processor for supporting these protocols? if yes, can you please let me know the list of PHYs that are supported? DP83869 is a costly chip since it supports both fiber and copper which we don't require, so we need to go with another 1G PHY which is cheaper and has support for these protocols.

In the below document on EtherCAT implementation, on page number 7, it is mentioned that "To complete the EtherCAT solution with the Sitara processors, Ethernet PHY devices such as TI’s TLK105L, TLK106L, DP836X0 , DP83822 or DP8384x are required." under the title "EtherCAT solution from TI ".

No. There is no dependency as such. Any industrial PHY (supporting latency and error handling requirements by EtherCAT spec) can be used with Sitara processors. Using TI PHY helps as it would be enabled and validated with Sitara processors.

You can check if DP83867 can be used.

This app note is not updated hence doesn't mention latest PHYs. We are taking action to update the app note.
