DRA821U: Queries about CAN-FD and Ethernet Switch

Part Number: DRA821U
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRA829, DRA821

Hi TI

There're questions about CAN-FD and Ethernet that Customer wants to clarify below.

This is necessary for the report to customer's clients, so please explain it in as much detail as possible.

1. I found DRA821U supports 20 ports of CAN-FD according to datasheet. Can you please clarify how many ports are able to be connected to MCU side?

2. Is it possible for CAN ports connected to MCU side to be seen as socket form after completion of AP Linux Boot ?

3. Is development support possible when implementing gateway functionality between CANs, and between CAN and Ethernet  in AP side ?

4. Is it possible to provide Customer with CAN-FD/HS driver for Linux ?

5. What's Estimated speed of communication between MCU's RMII and AP Switch Port (SGMII)?

Please don't care below sentences since it's captured from original thread for my understanding during writing.

  1. MCU 에 연결될 수 있는 CAN-FD 최대 개수
  2. AP 의 리눅스 부팅완료 후 MCU 에 연결된 CAN 들이 소켓형태로 보여질수 있는지 여부
  3. AP 에서 게이트웨이 (CAN, CAN/ETH) 기능 구현시, 개발지원여부
  4. 리눅스에서 CAN FD/HS 드라이버 제공가능여부
  5. MCU (RMII) AP 스위치 포트 (SGMII) 간 통신시 예상속도

  • Hi TI

Could you please update us at least partially if available ?

    Regards,
    Jack

  • Hi Jack,

    1. I found DRA821U supports 20 ports of CAN-FD according to datasheet. Can you please clarify how many ports are able to be connected to MCU side?

There are two in MCU domain and rest in Main Domain as can be seen from TRM

    2. Is it possible for CAN ports connected to MCU side to be seen as socket form after completion of AP Linux Boot ?

It's possible but it's not supported right now. We are evaluating this feature request.

    3. Is development support possible when implementing gateway functionality between CANs, and between CAN and Ethernet  in AP side ?

Do you mean Gateway running on AP or Gateway booted by AP ? Current gateway application is running on Main R5F and it is going to stay that way but we do have a pending requirement to boot it from A72, there is no plan for it yet.

    4. Is it possible to provide Customer with CAN-FD/HS driver for Linux ?

As I said above, Linux driver for CAN-FD is possible but we need to evaluate it. Can you tell me what is the urgency of this requirement ? If it's confidential then reach out to me over email.

    5. What's Estimated speed of communication between MCU's RMII and AP Switch Port (SGMII)?

speed will be 100Mbps (or max throughput of MCU RMII)

  • Hi Vineet

    Thanks for your quick reply.

I have further questions or reply below.

[Jack] If the evaluation would be done, Will you provide HotFix patch even before next release ?

[JACK] It means Gateway running on A72 of Main domain. They asked whether TI to provide customer with technical support when they develop the functionality in AP side.

[JACK] The basic functionality needs to be implemented by 4Q-2021. Let me check their desired target Date even though they may want ASAP. What's your email address?

  • Hi Jack,

[Jack] If the evaluation would be done, Will you provide HotFix patch even before next release ?

No, it will not be possible to provide hotfix patch. We are not even committing this for next release, as I mentioned previously the proposal is still under evaluation.

[JACK] It means Gateway running on A72 of Main domain. They asked whether TI to provide customer with technical support when they develop the functionality in AP side.

Gateway is implemented on R5F, not on A72. We currently have no plans for this

Please send me a friend request on E2E

  • Hi Vineet

Thanks for your very quick reply.

I have one more question about CAN-FD Ports number to be connected to R5F MCU of Main domain.

[JACK] Main domain also has R5F MCU, can it be connected to R5F out of 18 CAN-FD ports?

  • Hi Vineet.

    Thanks for kind conversation.

I sent you a message regarding further questions. Please asnwer to the question.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Vineet

Could you please answer the questions below?

    • If MCAN is connected to R5F MCU of Main domain, Is CAN stack (hopefully handled by J1939-TP and ISO-TP ) supported by TI-RTOS? Any related example? In this case, is CAN socket accessible on Linux on A72 ?
    • Please check if CAN stack supports J1939-TP and ISO-TP in TI-RTOS. And tell me if customer should buy CAN Stack through 3rd party.

    Regards,

    Jack

  • Hi Jack,

    See my replies inline

We do not certify compatibility of TI-RTOS with any 3P software. You will have to check the same with the 3P vendor. I am not aware of any example either. Having said that, TI-RTOS is getting deprecated and we are moving towards FreeRTOS from SDK 8.0 onwards, so please check compatibility with FreeRTOS (which is not owned by TI)

In this case, is CAN socket accessible on Linux on A72 ?

DRA829 which is a related SoC will have this support in SDK 8.1 and SDK 8.2 (March 2022) but the support is not yet planned for DRA821, this can be evaluated but there are no plans right now. Technically speaking, it's quite feasible.

Please check if CAN stack supports J1939-TP and ISO-TP in TI-RTOS. And tell me if customer should buy CAN Stack through 3rd party.

See my reply above, please check with 3P on compatibility with FreeRTOS (and SafeRTOS if safety is required)

    Regards
