TDA4VM: Does Video Encoder support encoding of 12-bit samples

Part Number: TDA4VM

Customer is considering to encode a processed RADAR signal for transmission.  It would be a single bit stream of 12-bit samples.  They realize it would not be lossless.

1) Would it work to use one of the planar formats and fill the Y-buffer with the radar data and U/V buffer with zero data?  In other words, does it process the luma and chroma channels independently or would providing dummy zero data to U/V channel have a negative impact on the encoded Y stream?

2)   Table 6693 in TRM mentions 10-bit formats  " unless the hardware doesn't support 10-bit pipeline".  Does encoder instantiation on TDA4VM support 10-bit pipeline?  And I assume that 12-bit sample stream is definitely not supported?

3) Any general comments on this application to guide customer?  has anyone seen H.264 used to encode non-video data, etc

Thanks,

David

  • Hi,

Would like to answer w.r.t codec.

    1. What exactly will be in the UV data if you are filling it with zero? Can you elaborate bit more. We have never tried this!
    2. 10-bit is supported. 12-bit is not supported.
    3. The docs with the SDK release packages are the one to guide the customers. No have not used h264 to encode non video data!
