Which platform is the best choice?

Hello Forum,

I came here after discovering the Leopardboard with a DM355. Then i searched more and found OMAP, ARM9 and many more processors and boards out there. Now i am confused because there is so many to choose from. Maybe some experts working in this area know best which suits my needs.

I want to develop a small low cost device which is easy to code for, is reliable, runs Linux and is doing the following things:

- Capture a frame from an connected analog camera when an i/o port is triggered

- Save this image as a JPG to RAM and then send this to an email account via a 3G Huawei E770 USB modul

- A plus would be onboard GPS, but not a must

Not many boards out there have analog video in, so i got stuck. I wish the Leopard would have one because its really cheap, but there is none it seems. Maybe i already choose the wrong platform anyway and there is a much more smaller board out there?

Can somebody give me some suggestions what platform i could use for my project? I would be very happy for this information.

                    As per my knowledge, DVEVM 355 and 365 have a image sensor interface (ISIF) module which interfaces with  external image sources as well as CCD

                    sensors. It supports both RAW Bayer data from CCD/CMOS sensors and processed YCbCr data from either a CMOS sensor with integrated image processing

                    or a video decoder interface.

    thanks for the tip. I checked the device on the website and it tells me 495 US$ for the board. Why is this so much more expensive than a hawkboard for example? Where is the big difference that makes the price?

    I searched lots information and think the Hawkboard could be a cheap solution, it also offers a video-in which i really need.

    Any more suggestions welcome.

    You could start with pretty much any of the boards such as BeagleXM and add a video decoder such as the TVP5150 to the video in port.

    This would allow you to capture analog video from a standard NTSC camera.

    thanks for your help. So i need to make my own small little addon board with this chip. I already saw it being used.

    I wonder if there is any other solution out there (another platform from TI other than DaVinci or OMAP) that is cheaper? I think all of these boards offer more features than we really need. We just want to run a slim linux for our application (no gui being used), which just captures a frame from an analog camera, then connects via 3G (USB stick or module) to the internet and send this image to ftp and email. Nothing else more we need. Maybe we should consider another platform, but which is the cheapest that still can be used for our project?

  • Thanks, i know these products. But these are nearly all OMAP / DaVinci solutions. My initial question was if there exists another platform thats much cheaper and not offers so much features, it should best suit my needs. I do not know the market because i am only a PC developer, so maybe someone can tell me just to use this or that for my little Linux project (Send an image from a camera over 3G to an email account).

  • Unfortunately I am not aware of specific boards other than these since there are many third party vendors building boards for these processors.

    I recommend doing Google searches for the following processors to see what boards may be out there.
