The pin can be used for external input.interrupt events - usage is general. It is not dedicated to any specific type of input/interrupt.

What the main processor will do if there is an external interrupt input

It will be handled by the interrupt handler (in software) and respond in whatever way your application needs. It is not much different than any other GPIO pin (which can also be setup with interrupts)
