UCD9222 for TMD320C6678

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320C6678, UCD9222, UCD7242

In my design I'm using the UCD9222 with UCD7242 to supply the core voltages of TMS320C6678, as in the DSP EVM.

1.From what I understood, the UCD9222 FLASH can be programmed using the I2C or the JTAG link, please confirm.

2.Can I connect the UCD9222 JTAG on the same JTAG chain, with the TMS320C6678?

3.On the DSP EVM, which device is being used to program the UCD9222 – the FPGA or the DSP (the I2C port is connected to both devices)?

4. Can you provide the initialization data of the UCD9222, as being used in the 6678 DSP EVM (parameters being set, e.g. switching freq, timing, voltages, current limits, etc. as well as the registers settings)?

  • 1.From what I understood, the UCD9222 FLASH can be programmed using the I2C or the JTAG link, please confirm.

We have been using the PMBus interface for UCD9222 programming and control during EVM development.  The PMBus interface is very similar to an I2C interface   I believe UCD9222 programming is also supported over the JTAG interface but we have not used it on the EVMs.  Note that the UCD9222 JTAG interface will be removed from the EVM in the next version to simplify the JTAG chain.  The Fusion Digital Power Designer GUI software is very easy to use over the PMBus interface.

2.Can I connect the UCD9222 JTAG on the same JTAG chain, with the TMS320C6678?

You should be able to connect the UCD9222 JTAG port and the TMS320C6678 JTAG port into the same chain.  The only concerns would be level translation and proper signal buffering; especially for the JTAG clock signals.  (See comments above.)

3.On the DSP EVM, which device is being used to program the UCD9222 – the FPGA or the DSP (the I2C port is connected to both devices)?

The PMBus interface from the UCD9222 is connected to both the FPGA and a Header.  We are currently configuring the UCD9222 devices using a pod connected to this header.  The connections to the FPGA are reserved for future use.  Note that the PMBus_CNTRL input to the UCD9222 is used for power supply sequencing.  Also note that the VD and VCL pins on the DSP are reserved at this time as we are still evaluating the usefulness of this interface.

    4. Can you provide the initialization data of the UCD9222, as being used in the 6678 DSP EVM (parameters being set, e.g. switching freq, timing, voltages, current limits, etc. as well as the registers settings)?

The latest firmware and configuration files will be available for download from the EVM manufacturer Advantech when they launch their EVM web page in the next few days.
