TDA4VM: vision_apps or gstreamer apps

Hi,

I'm using SK-TDA4VM to develop our vision applications. I noticed that the examples are based on gstreamer flow, before I got access to the SK-TDA4VM, I use vision_apps to develop our vision applications.

So my questions are:

1. The gstreamer flow seems more friendly, so should I develop my applications on it, or the gstreamer flow is only for prototyping and you have to work with vision_apps eventually?

2. Can I compile vision_apps and test it in the SK-TDA4VM board?

Hi Neal,

1. The general suggestion from TI is that if you are using the SK board, we recommend the edge AI SK which is based on Gstreamer.

2. The vision apps currently does not run on SK board as of the last release, EdgeAI SDK is the only SDK for SK boards

Hi Neal,

To add on to Nikhil's response,

We certainly recommend GStreamer for development on the SK-TDA4VM. TI provides a few GStreamer plugins that call OpenVX to use the hardware accelerator, which are installed when running the setup script included with the EdgeAI SDK.

As Nikhil said, vision apps examples are not supported on the SK boards due to differences in the driver and hardware. For the more information about the difference between the EVM and SK boards, please reference: e2e.ti.com/.../faq-tda4vm-what-is-the-difference-between-sk-tda4vm-and-the-j721e-evm

Thank you for all your replies, I have some more questions:

Before SDK7.3, when building a whole ADAS solution, we developed it based on vision_apps.

From SDK8.x onward, can I develop the whole solution based on GStreamer on EVM, including all the plan/control/tidl/canbus/camera/radar/lider parts etc. Or the GStreamer is mainly a more friendly tool for developing dl models on SK, I still need to use vision_apps for the whole solution on EVM?

Hi,

Please take a look at this documentation for examples of a gstreamer graph with which nodes are offloaded using which gstreamer plugins: https://software-dl.ti.com/jacinto7/esd/edgeai-sdk-j721e/latest/exports/docs/data_flows.html

In gstreamer, the full set of openvx kernels are not available, so there will be some modules that cannot be offloaded to the HWA.
For a list of gstreamer plugins we have, you can take a look at our github repository: https://github.com/TexasInstruments/edgeai-gst-plugins/tree/main/ext/tiovx

So the OpenVX/vision_apps is always recommended for EVM.
And Gstreamer for SK Boards.
