NAND and bad blocks

I see that NAND need some FEC. But what is about BadBlock. It seem recognition is done without any protection. So a single flipped bit in first 16bit of OOB data is enough and device will fail. Is it really intended? Any error correction happens AFTER the bad block recognition.
