Power Consumption for DM814x

I am looking for the power consumption of DM814x series. Please let me know if someone can help me.

  • I couldn't find any numeric value in DM8148 data sheet for power consumption of this device. I need to know what power supply should be used when designing a board with this SoC.

  • Mohammad,

The power consumption is extremely dependent on your use case and can range from 100s mW up to 4W.

Can you let me know more about your use case please? i.e. DSP speed, Arm speed, memory bandwidth requirements, 1 or 2 memory busses, PCIe usage, Sata, USB. Will you be using smart reflex?

    BR,

    Steve

  • Hi Steve,

Thank you very much for your response. Most probably, I will use DM8147 with following features:

    1. maximum speed for the processors, i.e., 1GHz for ARM and 750 MHz for DSP core

    2. one 512MB DDR2-667 (to capture HD video and send it to HDVICP for H.264 compression)

    3. One USB 2.0 OTG

I will not use PCI or SATA, but I may use smart reflex.

I wonder if the power consumption spread sheet of DM816x can be used to achieve an estimation for DM8147. Based on my requirements, this spread sheet calculates the required power level around 10W. Is this close to actual value?

    Look forward for your response.

    Thanks a lot,

    Mohammad

  • Mohammad,

I am currently out of the country but will work on this as soon as I get back to the office.

The 816x cannot be used as a guide since it is in a completely different process node and is very different to the 814x .

A fully loaded 814x running everything close to 100% consumes about 5W which is significantly lower than the 816x numbers.

    BR,

    Steve

  • Hi,

I'm looking for the required items for powering DM8147. I checked Digital Spectrum webpage which provides information for the EVM of DM816x. In the following table, I list the major items which I found for powering the EVM of DM816x:

  • Hello Mohammad,

We've run your use case and have the power estimates.  Since there are a fair amount of qualifiers to go with these estimates, it'd be best to work with you directly.  Can you provide an e-mail contact, company, project etc. and we will contact you directly?

    Thank you,

    Gary

  • Hi Gary,

  • Hello,

I want to know the power consumption for the DM8148 in the following configuration :

    - Industrial temperature grade (-40°/+70°C)

    - ARM Cortex-A8 running @ max freq. (1 GHz)

    - DSP : not used

    - DDR3 : 1GByte @ 800 MHz

    - SGX530 used for 2D/3D cartography

    - 1x SATA port used

    - 2x USB 2.0 used @ 480 Mb/s

    - 2x Ethernet @ 100M

    - 6x UARTs @ 115200

    - LCD output : 800*480 @ 60 Hz

    Thanks for your answer.

When will the corresponding Excel sheet be available ? (cf. http://e2e.ti.com/support/dsp/davinci_digital_media_processors/f/716/t/131807.aspx)

  • Hello Philippe,

We are checking on the delivery date for the power spreadsheet.  We will check your power scenario and revert in 2 days.

    Regards,
    Gary
