TDA4VM: MSC Understanding

Hi,

I have been referring to the TRM on understanding MSC. I can see and MSC and DSS(scalar) are related in their way of polyphase filtering. I understand the signal processing idea behind polyphase implementation but it's little hard for me to correlate with the real world image and how each tap, phase, filter coeffecients modify the image signal. Can you explain in simpler means or point me to some document that has these information. I would like to understand in the sense what kind of configuration will lead me to what kind of output, if the indepth explanation is not possible in this space.

Hi Dinesh,

I would suggest to refer to the MSC specs and/or DSS specs, it explains how polyphase filter works.

Thank you Brijesh, I did refer them too.

But my questions are

1. Does using 5 tap over 2 tap have improved latency response?
2. Also the same goes for 32 vs 64 phases? whereas the one in DSS has 16 phases? So if am using the DSS one will there be improved latency time but poor image quality in comparison to MSC?

Any of the 16-, 32-, 64-phase options is typically good enough unless you have every special image quality concerns.

Also, No, latency will not dependent on number of taps.

Have referred the document, Just to be on the same page can you please explain what these terminologies mean with respect to image pixels. Am sorry, that am not a DSP guy,

1. Tap
2. Phase
3. How these 2 are related to coefficients.

Phase means so many other things in my head. I guess this basic understanding should solve my problem.

"Tap" is related to the length of a filter, e.g., 5-tap FIR.

"Phase" is related to the poly-phase implementation of interpolation filters.
