AM6411: Is it needed to input the synchronized clock between AM64x and Ethernet PHY ?

Part Number: AM6411

Hi,

My customer is designing their own PCB board with AM64x and they have a question about AM64x with Ethernet PHY and clock. Could you please answer their question below.

On the AM64x GP EVM, the clock is input to the AM64x and Ethernet PHY via the clock buffer.

Is it needed to input the clock by synchronizing between AM64x and Ethernet PHY ?

If synchronization is not needed, remove the clock buffer from Proposal 1 of the Attachment and

I would like to have a configuration in which clocks are input to each as in Proposal 2.

If it is not required, they want to remove the clock buffer from the Case 1 and want to apply Case 2.

Is this no problem ?

Thanks and regards,

Hideaki

  • Hello Hideaki,

    Thank you for the query.

On the AM64x GP EVM, the clock is input to the AM64x and Ethernet PHY via the clock buffer.

Is it needed to input the clock by synchronizing between AM64x and Ethernet PHY ?

It is recommended to match the clock specs between the SoC ad the PHY to improve communication performance.

From the system function point of view, option 2 would work. There could be some performance related challenges when designing with multiple crystals on the same board.
