AM3358: sitara slave ethercat implementation and licence

Part Number: AM3358

Hello team,

i would like to implement a slave ethercat controller on my board, equipped with AM3358. I have a few questions to answer, before going on with development.

1. stuff for implementing ethercat on this device (am3358). I m working under linux, and using processor sdk 8.02, which additional software i need to implement an ethercat slave controller?

2. royalties. Licences for vending my board with ethercat slave controller implemented is included in am3358 costs or should i buy an additional licence to sell my device?

3. i know that it could be a bit off-tipoc, but i would like to know if ethercat will be supported on new AM62x devices, because i see that they have same required set of peripherals, PRU-ICSS and Ethernet controller, and if yes when will ethercat be supported onto these new devices??

Thank you

Kind Regards

Emanuele Peruzzi

  • OK,

    i have understood:

    - there is no TI support for EtherCat for Sitara running linux, TI only supports Ethercat on some devices running RTOS. This answers to questions 1 and 3. Now can someone clarify the problem of the royalties for using ethercat with sitara?? i mean:

    • if i use a Sitara processor running RTOS and i load TI ethercat firmare to make a ECAT slave device, should i pay some royalties?? Licences are already included when i buy sitara processor?? Or, if not, what i have to pay?
    • if i use a Sitara processor with linux and an external library for implementing an Ethercat slave, licences are included in the Sitara chip, or should i pay something? For example something for using ethercat library.

Please clarify doubts about ethercat licensing. Thanks

    Emanuele P.

  • Still no suggestions? Anyone can give some hints?

  • Hi,

As you point out TI does not have a Linux based solution for EtherCAT slave on the AM335x. There may be some 3rd parties that provide one.

There is not an additional royalty cost for AM335x devices on top of the price paid for the device. If you use an RTOS from a 3rd party you would need to negotiate with them on their licensing cost for the OS and this would be the same for the 3rd party developer of the EtherCAT SW.

    Best Regards,

    Schuyler
