AM3356: Regarding the IS43TR16512B DDR3 SDRAM

Part Number: AM3356

Hai,

We have designed  AM3356 based OEM board with 2 Giga Bit DDR3 SDRAM (IS43TR16128C), which has a base speed of 1333. It is working with no issues. Now we need to upgrade the RAM size to 8 Giga Bit. So we choose IS43TR16512B as our chip. But the base speed mentioned is 1600.

Does AM3356 support this DDR3 SDRAM(IS43TR16512B) which has a slightly higher base speed..?

Jibin K Mathai

  • Jibin, what i think you are referring to is the speed grade of the device (ie, it's maximum capable data rate).  So the 1333 device has a maximum data rate of 1333MTs (megaTransfers per second), and the 1600 device has max of 1600MTs.

The max frequency for a memory is half the data rate, so the 1333MTs device operates with 667MHz, and so on

Most JEDEC compliant memories will work at the max speed grade or lower.  So AM335x will work with these devices, however, the max frequency for AM335x is 400MHz (800MTs).  You cannot operate the interface higher.
