J721EXCP01EVM UART Boot Problem

Greetings! Our company is currently using the J721EXCP01EVM board with the attached J721S2XSOMG01EVM SOM module. We used UART boot mode but failed to boot it. We tried three different itb (sysfw-j721s2-evm.itb, sysfw-j721e-evm.itb and sysfw.itb), but none of them worked and they displayed the same result as the last figure shows. Could you please tell me how to fix this problem? It’s urgent. Thank you very much.

  • Hi,

Few questions before we dig deeper:

    sysfw-j721s2-evm.itb

This should be the right one.

    • Which SDK version are you using?
    • Can you try to boot using MMC-SD card? Is that funtctional?

    Best Regards,
    Keerthy

  • Hi, thank you for your response, sincerely. According to the tutorial website (ti.com/Jacinto7QSG) included in the SOM box, I used the Processor SDK Linux
from this link: https://www.ti.com/tool/download/PROCESSOR-SDK-LINUX-J721E/ . I used both Ubuntu 20.04 and Ubuntu 18.04, tried two versions (08.04.00.11 and 07.00.01.01), and set SW8 10000010 and SW9 00000000 for SD card boot, but none of them printed anything when using SD card to boot.  I checked the same problem on TI forum, and some answer that four files (tispl.bin, tiboot3.bin, u-boot.img , sysfw.itb) should be copyied to the boot partition of the SD card, but it's not the reason for me because these four files exist in my boot partition. Therefore, I tried the UART boot and it printed as the last figure shows. I have two J721EXCP01EVM boards and two J721S2XSOMG01EVM SOM modules, I tried both but none of them worked.

I think there might be some reasons:

Firstly, the document from tutorial website (ti.com/Jacinto7QSG) is for J721EXSOMG01EVM SOM rather than our J721S2XSOMG01EVM SOM, thus I doubt the SDK link from this tutorial doesn't fit with our J721S2XSOMG01EVM SOM. But I didn't find any document about J721S2XSOMG01EVM SOM from TI official website.

Secondly, is there any possibility that the chip is the HS version and it could not be used as GP version until writing key information to efuse via keywriter?

Could you please help me to fix this problem?

  • But I didn't find any document about J721S2XSOMG01EVM SOM from TI official website.

There is a different SDK for J721s2 & the J721e SDK does not cater to J721s2 SOM. Please contact local support to get access to the J721s2 SDK.

    Best Regards,
    Keerthy

  • Hi, thank you for your response. We asked local support but they don't have the J721S2 SDK. Could you please tell me whether the J721EXCP01EVM board could be used together with the J721S2XSOMG01EVM SOM? Or the J721EXCP01EVM board only can be used together with the J721S2XSOMG01EVM SOM? Thank you.

  • Hi Jingpeng,

Adding to the response from Keerthy:

Let me ask you this question - are you supposed to be using J721E device or J721S2 device?

    Regards
    Karthik

  • Hi Karthik,

I am supposed to be using J721S2 device. Thank you.

    Best regards,

    Jingpeng

  • Ok, please talk to your local support for download link to the J721S2 SDK.
