PROCESSOR-SDK-AM64X: Could not load u-boot in OSPI Mode on AM64x EVM

Hi,

I have built the U-boot files tiboot3.bin, tispl.bin, u-boot.img using the SDK 08.02.00.23 (05 May 2022), and referred the TRM SPRUIM2E – MAY 2020 – REVISED SEPTEMBER 2022 for BootMode switch configuration.

I have referred the flashing instructions available at https://software-dl.ti.com/processor-sdk-linux/esd/AM64X/08_02_00_23/exports/docs/linux/Foundational_Components/U-Boot/UG-QSPI.html to flash the images in OSPI.

I kept the Switch pins SW2 and SW3 to 11010000 10000000 respectively. After resetting the Board the Tera Term shows nothing.

When I change the switch to xSPI i.e SW2 and SW3 to 11001110 01000000, the board boots up showing "Trying to boot from SPI". (Screenshot is attached below).

Does the board booting in OSPI mode? As its written trying to boot from SPI.

What is the correct switch configuration to boot in OSPI Mode?

How will I verify that the board is booting in OSPI?

Please help me to solve the above questions.

Hi Vishal,

Your boot mode switch setting for OSPI is correct. Please take a look at this page as a reference: AM64x MCU+ SDK: EVM Setup (ti.com). Look for the below picture:

Regarding how to verify the board is booting in OSPI, if you have flashed U-Boot to OSPI, and don't have any other boot media flashed, then it proves booting is from OSPI.

As per the TRM, the switch position you mentioned corresponds to xSPI.

Does this mean that the same switch settings is applicable to SPI, QSPI?

Vishal, there are separate BOOTMODE pin setting for SPI/QSPI/OSPI/xSPI. What you have chosen on the EVM is xSPI. This will attempt to boot from the xSPI compatible flash device on the EVM. I can't speak for the "SPI" statement in the boot log, this may just be a generic statement that applies to all SPI type booting.

You can probe the upper data signals on the OSPI interface to prove the device is booting with all 8bits on the data bus.

Vishal,

Just to clarify, the AM64x EVM has the Octal SPI memory device of S28HS512TGABHM010 from Cypress. According to the data sheet, this memory device has xSPI interface:

• Octal interface (8S-8S-8S, 8D-8D-8D) - JEDEC eXpanded serial peripheral interface (SPI) (JESD251) compliant

So the boot mode should be set to xSPI.
