USB On-The-Go

Hi folks,

I was wondering if the experts here could get me started with some strategies to implement USB On-The-Go for a board with a C6678.

I'm looking at a few of the TI peripherals that offer OTG capabilities:

TUSB6020
- "It will enable Texas Instruments application processors (DSPs/OMAP/MCUs) that do NOT have integrated USB cores to function as a USB device."
- It uses VLYNQ ... how hard is it to implement VLYNQ on the C6678?
TPS69590
- USB 2.0 OTG
- Made to communicate with the OMAP universal transceiver macrocell interface (UTMI) + low pin interface (ULPI). The C6678 doesn't have those, so would this be a non-starter?

Am I missing anything obvious?

How much software support is built into the current Linux for C6 for OTG? How about the SYS/BIOS MCSDK?

I appreciate any guidance you guys can offer.

I'm not familiar w/ USB OTG peripherals, maybe someone will have some options that are better suited.

That said, the C6678 doesn't have VLYNQ, and to support it would require glue logic such as FPGA to go from one of the other peripherals on the device such as PCIe to VLYNQ, but I would think that it would be easier to go PCIe to an USB OTG implementation in an FPGA.

Can you repost the Linux question in the Linux section? I'm sure you'll get a much quicker response there.

Here are two TI USB devices that have PCIe interfaces.

TUSB7320

You need to check but I beleive these devices can work wiht the C6678's PCIe interface.

Chad, I was afraid that would be the answer. TI's USB OTG solution, the TUSB6020, really just isn't meant to play with the C6678.

Hector, the TUSB7320 and TUSB7340 are awesome chips, but they provide regular USB functionality, not USB On-The-Go functionality.

I'm looking at MAXIM-IC's 3353 USB On-The-Go chip, which has an I2C interface. If you all have any thoughts on the pros and cons of that please let me know. I could be missing something obvious.

Lee,

I'm sure the module would be functional, but I'd be hesitant to say if it could meet your throughput requirements. Our I2C implementation only goes up to 455KHz. It's not intended for high speed communication on our device, but more for I2C EEPROM and other slow I2C communication components.
