PROCESSOR-SDK-AM64X: HSR-PRP support on Base Filesystem

To clarify do you mean HSR works on the pre-build image https://dr-download.ti.com/software-development/software-development-kit-sdk/MD-InmvA50mCw/08.05.00.21/tisdk-default-image-am64xx-evm.wic.xz (also in the filesystem directory of the SDK install) but does not on the tisdk-base-image-am64xx-evm.wic.xz found in the filesystem directory of the SDK install?

Also can you confirm the SDK version.

Yes, it works on pre-built image tisdk-default-image-am64xx-evm.tar.xz available in the in the filesystem folder of sdk (version 08.02.00.23) https://dr-download.ti.com/software-development/software-development-kit-sdk/MD-yXgchBCk98/08.02.00.23/ti-processor-sdk-linux-am64xx-evm-08.02.00.23-Linux-x86-Install.bin  but it doesn't works on tisdk-base-image-am64xx-evm.tar.xz filesystem available in the same SDK folder.

If we see the modules folder in the base filesystem, we can see that hsr.ko kernel object already available in the location

\lib\modules\5.10.100-g7a7a3af903\kernel\net\hsr\hsr.ko

still hsr is not working in the base filesystem. Why is it so?

1. On Base Filesystem:

if I check my kernel configuration for HSR enable:

root@am64xx-evm:/proc# zcat config.gz | grep HSR
CONFIG_HSR=m

So the HSR is installed as module and is available in the \lib\modules\5.10.100-g7a7a3af903\kernel\net\hsr\hsr.ko as kernel object.

When I try to make HSR interface using the commands: # ip link add name hsr0 type hsr slave1 eth1 slave2 eth2 supervision 45 version 1

the terminal shows:

root@am64xx-evm:~# ip link add name hsr0 type hsr slave1 eth1 slave2 eth2 supervision 45 version 1
ip: RTNETLINK answers: Invalid argument
root@am64xx-evm:~#

2. Whereas on Default Filesystem, the output is;

root@am64xx-evm:~# ip link add name hsr0 type hsr slave1 eth1 slave2 eth2 supervision 45 version 1

here also, the hsr.ko file is present in the \lib\modules\5.10.100-g7a7a3af903\kernel\net\hsr\hsr.ko directory

and the kernel configuration is enables as CONFIG_HSR=m.

So how to make HSR work in Base FS?

I was able to replicate the same error on the pre-built images in SDK 8.5. On default HSR works, on base there is the RTNETLINK invalid argument error. I did also notice that hsr kernel module is configured =m on both. Somewhat confusingly lsmod command lists hsr only once you try to configure hsr on for the first time. This was initially confusing me on trying to figure out if the module is loaded or not. But it looks like loads automatically and stays loaded on both (default and base) once you try to configure it on.

What is your goal of using the prebuilt base filesystem? Does HSR work if you build the kernel yourself?

We want to use base filesystem as it is only 210 MB in size.

If I build HSR in kernel itself then also same error is happening.

Did you found any solution to make it fully working on base FS?

We did not yet find the exact root cause, but I was able to reproduce. I filed a bug and it is in the process of being fixed, hopefully it will make the 8.6 SDK release. This should be solvable as the default filesystem build and kernel config works, so it is just down to narrowing what is missing from base.
