Connecting AM3517 as slave device to MSP430

Is it possible to connect the AM3517 as a slave device to the MSP430? If so, how? UART? Also, what would be the software implications if any.

We have a lot of code effort invested in the MSP430 and we want the AM3517 as a QVGA LCD driver to the MSP430. Yes, we understand that it is better to just port the entire design over to the AM3517, but we are looking at our options to use our existing validated hardware and software.

For your application I would use either I2C or SPI. both are low pin count and synchronous interfaces.

Thank you. How would one configure the AM3517 to operate as a LCD slave mode device via I2C or SPI?

Take a look at the Technical Reference Manual (TRM) fount here http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/am3517.html

It provides information on configuring these interfaces. There are also some low level examples on the forums that you may find useful.

Hi Paul,

I was just wondering what would be the draw back of using the UART? By UART you would be able to do bi directional communication easily?

You could use a UART if that works better for your application. I2C and SPI are more commonly used for displays. If you write your code to emulate the command set of a display controller then you have code reuse for displays that use the emulated controller. Another factor to consider is the bandwidth of the interface against the requirements of your project.
