AVB compliant EMAC on DM8148

As preliminary reference manual of DM8148 talks about AVB, I want to know what kind of AVB support is there on DM8148.

AVB needs two basic h/w support in its EMAC

1==> 1588 PTP time stamping module (802.1AS)

2==> special FIFO's/Queues for class 4 and 5 AV traffic(time sensitive queuing and forwarding - 802.1Qav)

I can see that DM8148 has 1588 time stamping module to support(802.1AS),

but what about 802.1Qav h/w support? does EMAC of DM8148 provides special queues for AV traffic shaping?

Rest of the AVB needs like 802.1Qat, 1722 and 1733 can be implemented in software(drivers and protocol stack),

To be able to make AVB compliant device, EMAC should have needed h/w support.

Can we say DM8148 can be used to make AVB compliant products?

I have been asking the same questions for a while now. The answers will hopefully be revealed in the next version of the TRM , which is due out soon??. Also, don't forget about the 3-port switch. This also needs to support 802.1AS and Qav for the device to be AVB compliant.

Any updates on the TRM for the DM8148?. Specifically the EMAC/SW section regarding AVB?.

Hi,

The Ethernet Subsystem Peripheral Reference Guide (to be merge in the TRM) is under the final steps of review. It should be available in the coming weeks.

The guide does cover IEEE 1588 and 802.1Qav.

PSP software support for these component is currently scheduled for the end of October release.

Hi Benoit

To be AVB compliant, the ethernet subsystem including the switch must support:

802.1AS (gPTP) - the time sync standard

802.1Qav (FQTSS) the packet "shaping" standard

802.1Qat (SRP) the stream reservation standard

To support IEEE1722, the AVB audio/video transport protocol, there must be some way of generating a media (i.e sampling) clock from the gPTP

Will the TRM cover all these?.

I have reviewed the 3PSW section of the latest DM8148 TRM. I find it poorly written.

There is a section on AVB, that is basically a tutorial. It does not, however, discuss the DM8148's actual support for AVB.

Where or to whom should feedback on this section be directed?.

The Ethernet subsystem chapter in the DM33xx TRM seems in much better shape the the 3PSW chapter in the DM814x TRM. Both document 3 port 10/100/1000 ethernet subsystems and seem to have the same feature set. Is this true?. Can we use that documentation for the DM814x?.
