AM623: H.264 video encoding / decoding

Part Number: AM623

My customer is looking for a H.264 video encoding / decoding solution for AM6234 (see below).

What is our approach here, do we refer our customers to Ittiam or other third parties?

Best regards,

Frank

We’re investigating integrating H.264 video into the Sitara processor. We’ve selected the AM6234 for the Falcon product. We’d like to reuse the AM6234 or GPU enabled AM6254 for our next product.

  1. Does TI have any recommendations on how to support H.264 from the Sitara family of processors?
  2. Does TI have any plans in your roadmap to add an H.264 encoder / decoder to their library for this family?
  3. How much value does having a GPU provide in implementing a H.264 feature?
  4. If TI sees no easy path to H.264 video encoding / decoding on the Sitara family, what is the lowest power option recommended for this function in their family of options.
  • Hi Frank,

For what application is your customer using AM6234/AM6254?

H.264 Encoding/Decoding on AM62x is done in software using open source GStreamer plugins on ARM core. GStreamer package is available with our SDK release. There is no Hardware Accelerator in AM62x family.

But, we do have Hardware accelerator on AM62Ax family of processor that has HEVC and H.264 Encode and decode functionality. If they are interested to know more on AM62A, let us know.

Also GPU is available only on AM625x series of Sitara processors. AM6234 doesn't have a GPU.  The GPU on AM62 is only meant for graphics support and not for general purpose compute where you can run algorithms using OpenCL. Current plan is to support QT based graphics stack that uses OpenGLES based DDK 1.1x package to leverage the GPU for graphics for 2D and 3D rendering on the display.

Has your customer reviewed the following link on GPU in our Linux Academy?

    Hope this helps.

    Best Regards,

    Suren
