AM62A7: AM62Ax Power-Estimation Tool (PET) not working properly

Part Number: AM62A7

Hi,

I recently obtained the PET tool for AM62A7 and I encountered an issue with its functionality. Specifically, I downloaded the "AM62A_PET_Public_1v1.xlsm" excel file from the ti website, which is located inside the sprr469.zip file. Despite enabling macros, I found that the "Estimated Power" section does not respond to changes in the "Processor Core Utilization (%)" settings. The estimated power value, which is too low to be accurate, only appears to be affected by the Peripheral mode and utilization fields. For context, I am currently using the latest version of Office 365 Desktop.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Best regards,

Andrea

  • Hi Andrea,

I am unable to replicate the issue you are observing, although I do agree that the Processor Core Utilization % values are not reflecting accurate power consumption values for you.

Have you tried opening the tool in a browser, or on a different computer? Perhaps you are encountering company firewall protections that could be suppressing the macros.

To confirm I just downloaded the PET from https://www.ti.com/lit/zip/sprr455 and it is working for me.

Another curious detail is that you are using sprr469 where the version I downloaded was sprr455.

    Regards,

    Colin

  • Hi Colin. SPR455 is for AM62x (without A) that is another processor. For that part I confirm that the PET tool is working also for me.

The processor we want to simulate is AM62Ax that is a new part number.
It is a new part of Texas just released on the website and it has a different configuration compared to AM62x because it has the deep learning accelerator and 32-bit memories. The PET tool of this specific processor does not work for me.

  • Hi Andrea,

Did you try the tool from the link I provided above?

    Regards,

    Colin

  • Hi Colin. Yes I tried and it works but SPR455 it is for another Microprocessor, not the AM62A7,

It's important to use the PET specific for AM62A7 because that processor is different from AM62x (without A).

The Link for the PET is the following and you can find in the above page,in "Design tools & simulation" tabs named "AM62Ax Power-Estimation Tool (PET)"
    https://www.ti.com/lit/zip/sprr469

And it is not working. Ad I mentioned the CPU/GPU/DSP percentage didn't affect the power consumption at all.

  • Hi Andrea,

I think understand now, thank you for clarifying.

Are you able to try using the tool on another version of MS Office? I drafted this version of the tool on MS Office 2019. The issue you are seeing has not been reported by others (yet), and I am unable to replicate the issue that you are demonstrating.

    Regards,

    Colin

  • Hi Colin,

I tried with a different version of Excel and even with Libre office calc

Libre office give me further information that can better address the issue:
It seems that there is a reference to an absolute path to Ti internal server.
    Please see the attached picture.

    Thanks and regards.

  • Hi Andrea,

We escalated this issue. Unfortunately no one is replicating what you are seeing. And we confirmed that other customers have been using the tool for over a week and are not observing this issue.

The screenshot you provided is very interesting to me, since that referenced file should not be associated with the published tool. If you go into Data>edit links> then you can see the file referenced from your screenshot (thank you for this feedback!). But even if you "break links" in that window then I doubt the behavior will change. Maybe you can give that a try, but it should not make a difference.

The consensus among the managers and experts whom this was escalated to is that the issue you are observing is likely related to a application-security issue within your company. Is there a way for you to try to download and test the tool without your company PC?

    Regards,

    Colin
