Hi,

I'm using the TDA4VE SOM (PN J721S2XSOMG01EVM) plugged on to an EVM common board (PN J721EXCP01EVM).

I'm trying to setup a nVME SSD drive connected to the m.2 port underneath the common board.

The device is not recognized in linux when running "fdisk -l" or "lsblk". There is also no /dev/nvmeXX entry.

I'm using the Processor SDK Linux for J721s2 version 08_06_00.

Note: the NVMe SSD drive is correctly recognized when using the J721E SOM and the Processor SDK Linux for J721.

  • Hi Matthieu,

    Unfortunately on TDA4VE, the M.2 key PCIe port is not supported. This is mainly a hardware limitation as the TDA4VE has less number of peripherals/feature available than TDA4VM. Although the CPB (Common Processor Board) has the M.2 port, this is for when the TDA4VM SOM is used with CPB.

    The recommendation is to use the PCIe lane on the top side of the EVM. To connect the NVMe SSD M.2 card, an adapter will be needed, but one of the two PCIe slots will be functional on the top side of the EVM.

  • I tried to connect the nVME drive through a PCIe NVMe adapter card on the J8 connector on top of the board.

    I still don't see the drive in Linux (nothing in /dev/nvmexxx).

    Doing a comparison between the dmesg logs, I see vision-apps in your logs, but is PSDK Linux being used alongside PSDK RTOS (for vision apps) in this case?

    Apologies for the late response. For the case of using PSDK Linux alongside PSDK RTOS, there is an issue that we are actively debugging for the usage of the topside PCIe lane. 

    The quickest option right now to attach a SSD card is to buy a USB-C to M.2 NVMe adapter to connect to the USB-C port on the EVM. USB-C specifically since USB also has the same limitation as PCIe where the TDA4VE has a reduced set of peripherals than the TDA4VM, so only either USB-A or USB-C ports on the EVM can be enabled at once, and USB-C is the port that is enabled by default.

    I tried it out just now as well and found some interesting behavior. When trying with a USB-C to USB-C connection between EVM and NVME, I see the same logs as yours. However, when trying with NVME connected to USB-C to USB-A adapter, connected to USB-A to USB-C to EVM, I see that the PCIe card gets mounted. Attached are logs where NVME card is mounted as sda:

    It does hurt me to say this, since I have asked you to buy multiple different hardware in the past, but could you obtain a similar adapter? Attached is my set up.

    Otherwise, if you have some sort of USB-C storage device, could you try using those as well? We will try to debug what is going on with the USB-C to USB-C connection, but I cannot give an estimate for how long the debug will take.

    Although, I have a colleague that has been using the USB-C to USB-C connection with J721S2, so I will check with them to see if they have any input on this issue.

    Can you also make sure that the NVMe drive is formatted as EXT4FS, and it has a partition created? Looking through my logs where my device is not mounted, I see that they are still different than yours. Although not mounted, I get log messages regarding detecting a "USB Mass Storage device" and the errors I see are mainly about reading from this detected storage device. I do not see these error messages in your logs, so it could just be that the NVMe drive is not formatted correctly.

    If you have a USB-C to USB-A adapter, or a USB hub that fits into USB-C, could you try using those to adapt the USB-C connection from NVMe to USB-A, then back to USB-C to connect into the EVM?

    I think there is an issue with direct USB-C to USB-C connection for M.2 NVMe cards specifically.

    Attached are pictures of two USB hubs we have verified to work. The white one is the exact one in my previous picture. The silver one has more USB-A ports - but as a warning, it seems the issue can only be worked around if we convert to USB-A, so the 4 USB-A ports must be used on this USB-C hub that also has one USB-C port on it.
