SK-AM62: Creating a first 'Hello World' application and run it on the EVM

It does not contain information specifically about developing Linux userspace code in CCS, but it does discuss developing a simple userspace program to run on the EVM.

My understanding is that we only provide an SDK installer for the Linux SDK on a Linux computer. We used to provide a windows "installer" on some of our older devices that just had the prebuilt Linux SDK images. (i.e., you still needed a Linux machine to do Linux development). However, you can just download those Linux images from the SDK webpage if you want, so there was no need to keep the windows "installer".

Thank you for your response. I have already visited this link. There is a lot of information in there and not all things are very clear how to do.

But I have managed to download and install on my Windows PC the 'mcu_plus_sdk_am62x_08_06_00_18-windows-x64-installer.exe' SDK.

Inside this SDK I have found some "hello world" examples that I have managed to import in my CCS Studio workspace (also on Windows PC).

Problem is that when trying to build them I always run into this "makefile_ccs_bootimage_gen: 77: recipe for target 'all' failed" error. Please see attached pictures. On some other TI E2E posts I have found a suggestion to add the path for the 'gmake.exe' but unfortunately it did not solve the problem on my side.

Not sure how I can overcome this.... What I'm missing here?

Hello Dan,

Ok, we should pause here. Which core are you trying to write code for? What OS are you expecting to run on that core?

1) The AM62x MCU+ SDK 8.6 allows you to develop FreeRTOS (or bare metal, aka NORTOS) code to run on the AM62x M4F or R5F. If you are new to development, I would suggest learning on the M4F first. That is because the AM62x R5F is also running the device manager code, which makes development more complicated. 2) The AM62x Linux SDK 8.6 allows you to develop Linux code to run on the AM62x Linux A53 cores. The reason I pointed you to the AM62x Linux Academy, is because I assumed you were trying to write a Linux userspace program that would run on the A53 cores.

First of all I'm not trying to write code for the moment. I'm trying to build, load and run one of your already existing "Hello World" example applications on the SK-AM62 EVM that I have on my desk.

Initially I intended to write myself an 'hello world' application but as I have see on your "Linux Academy" there were some indications on how to do that.

So I have tried to follow the steps here and do that on a Linux PC (Development Host) but also on my Windows PC since I did not had any success and all kind of impediments on the Linux PC. 

On the Linux PC (using the PROCESSOR-SDK-LINUX-AM62X "ti-processor-sdk-linux-am62xx-evm-08.06.00.42-Linux-x86-Install.bin") I was not able to find any "Hello World" examples inside this SDK. And also I'm not able to import other examples inside the CCS studio. See bellow pictures

Also another problem I had on the Linux PC (on the CCS Studio side) is that I was not able to create a "target" as indicated here

When trying to do the above step I got the bellow error

This are the reasons why I have tried also on the Windows PC. Where I have used as I have indicated in the previous post the MCU-PLUS-SDK-AM62X "mcu_plus_sdk_am62x_08_06_00_18-windows-x64-installer.exe". This SDK has some "hello world" examples inside and I think the ones that I have tried to build are created for the M4F, if my understanding is correct.

This examples here I was able to successfully import them in the CCS Studio but when trying to build them I get the "make file / gmake error"

As you can see No success either on Linux or Windows. 

I hope you understand my problems here and if possible try to get a SK-AM62 EVM at your desk and try to do the same as I'm trying to do. In this way I think you can guide me much better since as I have little expertise with Linux development and I'm new to TI SDK's, tools etc.

Also when trying to do the 'SOC Initialization' step (under EVM Setup) on Windows I'm not able to flash the 'Initialization binary'

Not sure about what HS-SE or HS-FS are referring too... What does this Note mean?

How should I know that I'm dealing with a "HS-SE device" or a "HS-FS device"?

The build using makefiles (on Windows side) is still not working. I have tried this with one 'hello world' example as indicated on your website.

Probably is the same issue that I'm facing under CCS Studio (on Windows side)

Hello Dan,

The error most probably suggests that CCS1220 is not installed at the default location C:\ti because of which make has trouble finding the path to mkdir. Please make sure you have followed the below setup guides.

Hello Dan,

You have installed CCS1230 version. AM62x MCU+ SDK v8.6 requires CCS1220 version. The link for the same is:

If you do not want to go through the trouble of installing this particular version, you can for now change the CCS version in the file <MCU+ SDK INSTALL DIR>/imports.mak as shown below. However, please note it is recommended to install the particular tool version the MCU+ SDK depends on.

After installing Code Composer Studio 12.2.0.00009 I still have a build error when trying to build 'hello world' examples

Hi Dan,

I see from the image that the CCS workspace name is "CCS Workspace". So, the build error comes because of the presence of a space in the workspace name. If you use a CCS workspace name without any space, then the build should be successful. You can for example have a CCS workspace named "CCS_Workspace"

Yes. That was the problem. I'm able to build the 'hello_world_am62x-sk_m4fss0-0_freertos_ti-arm-clang' example under CCStudio 12.2.0

But maybe this is not such a big problem.

Hi Dan,

Please refer to the below Flashing Troubleshooting guide

If you are getting those errors, it is most probably the case that you are missing some images required in .cfg file. Please make sure each image is built before trying to flash. More specifically, any image ending with .tiimage in .cfg file comes prebuilt with the SDK. So, you would want to build images ending with .appimage extensions.

Please also note you would first want to identify the device type (GP or HS-FS) you are using before trying the flashing procedure to make sure you are using the correct image types. You can refer to the below guide to identify the device type.

Once you have identified the device type, use the corresponding .cfg file & build the required images. Then, you should be able to successfully do the flashing procedure.

Hello again Prashant,

Today I did a new try and I was able to do the "Flash SOC Initialization Binary" step.

First I have build the binaries from the mcu_plus_sdk installation path (For Windows gmake -sj4 all)

After that I was able to perform the "flash SOC initialization binary to EVM" 

For SK-AM62

• python uart_uniflash.py -p COM9 --cfg=sbl_prebuilt/am62x-sk/default_sbl_null.cfg

After that I have POWER-OFF the EVM and changed the boot mode to OSPI NOR. When POWER-ON again the 

was displayed in Tera Term (UART terminal).

Then I have moved to the "CCS Launch, Load and Run" step. This was also OK but The "Hello World" serial output is displayed only on CCStudio Console terminal. See below picture

I was expecting this "hello world" output message in the Tera Term also ... Is this OK? 

Please let me know if I have missed something.

Hi Dan,

The M4F examples uses MCU UART for dumping logs. You must open the port corresponding to MCU UART in Teraterm. Usually, you can open all the four UART ports that you must be seeing then the Hello World should appear on one of them. That will then be your MCU UART port & can be used for seeing the logs from M4F examples.
