VPSS Capture specifications/limitations

We are in the process of selecting a cpu for our next gen platform and got a question about the video capture capability of DM8168. I understand that the the VPSS sub system runs on a separate mcu and has its own closed firmware.

1- Is there still an hardware interface for programming the capture ? Using registers and handling interrupts and dma ourselves ?

2- Is OMX library the only software available for handling the capture?

3- Does custom resolution/framerate are supported ? ie 2048x2048@10Hz or 640x480@120Hz or maybe something odd like 1024x120@30fps ?

Hi,

Following are the answers to some of your questions.

1. Regarding hardware interface its controlled through its own MCU. MCU takes care of programming the registers and DMA.

2, Capture will be available as a OMX library as well as standard V4L2 interface on Linux Operating system.

3, Capture can supports any arbitary resolution upto.1920 pixels iper line. There is no limit on lines per frame. It can be driven with a maximum pixel clock of 165MHz.

That's good news. And what if I want to capture 16bit monochrome image with external sync ? External sync support is specified in the device datasheet but marked as unsupported in omx docs...

Hi,

Discrete/embedded sync will be supported in the V4L2 driver of the HDVPSS capture.
