TMS320F240PQ, SDFLASH CONNECTION ISSUE

I'm having issues connecting to the programmer. I have both the generic and OEM XDS510-USB. I cannot make the USB connection. I do have the correct drivers installed on a windows 7 32bit system.

The part I want to read EEPROM data is TMS320F240PQ

Nick,

I have only used the F240 device with XDS510PP+ debug probe. You first need to check if your PC is able to communicate with the F240. i.e. you need to ensure that the hardware path between your PC all the way to the F240 is good. The way to do this is to connect to the device using CCSv3.3. Unlike the newer Eclipse-based CCS versions, CCSv3.3 is not free.

I was able to connect by using CCSv4 I couldn't find V3.3 anywhere online.

Even after the installation of CCSv4 was done and working SDflash still doesn't work.

That is strange. F240 is not supported in Eclipse-based CCS. CCSv3.3 was the last version that supported F240.

Please send me a screenshot of CCSv4 successfully connected to F240. Also try writing to a RAM location through CCS and check if the RAM value actually changes. Also, send a photograph of the XDS510 debug probe you have.

Hi Nick,

The page has been uploaded to have a direct link to the latest CCS 3.3 version which is available for use for no charge. However, this version does NOT support 24x. You need a special CCS 3.3 version which requires a paid license. Do you or your organisation have (or once had) a license for CCS 3.3 for 24x?

They are tools developed by Spectrum Digital, a company that shut down a few years ago. IOW, these are not tools developed by TI.

CCS 3.3 is installed, the XDS510-USB is setup in the CCS setup program and the address is changed to 510.

SDConfig can connect to the XDS510-USB.

When I open CCS 3.3 I get this same error, clicking ignore lets me into the program. However I can't get past the error.

I tried adding the XDS560 as it has a partially installed windows driver, no change.

Did you run CC-setup and choose F240 with XDS510 emulator?

You can remove XDS560.

Yes, I did run CC-setup and do that.

I added the XDS560 as I thought it might have been a bug. It is detected in windows device manager even though I don't have that PCI card installed in the computer.

Nick,

In difficult-to-debug situations like this, we need to eliminate the possible sources of error. It is important to narrow down the source of error to either the CCS+Emulator combination or your board+F240 device. If you have a known-good board (with a known-good F240 device), you can try that. But, based on your posts so far, I do get the feeling that this is a driver issue. IOW, your board/device/Emulator, by themselves, may be fine. But the H/W is not playing nicely with the CCS + Windows version you are using. Per Ki “You need a special CCS 3.3 version which requires a paid license”. Can you please confirm you have this version? Frankly, I am at a loss as to how to support this moving forward.

I looked through my email archive and found the below interaction with an employee at Spectrum Digital (circa December 2019):

My question:

Customer wants to program TMS320F240 using XDS510USB. Possible? Specifically, does Prg2xx or SDFlash work with this combination? Does Prg2xx work only with XDS510PP+? If so, will they be able to use SDFlash with XDS510USB to program the F240?

SD response:

Safest is to use XDS510PP, a very old emulator that was relevant at time of F240.

Per the link above it seems possible for XDS510USB, but with a number of custom steps. [Note: That link does not work anymore]. What probably is not stated is that since all this stuff is very old, you probably have to run on an old PC as well. Probably something in the Win NT vintage and may WinXP, but no guarantees.

Based on the above, I wonder if it is worth your time to get this to work with XDS510 USB. You may have better luck with XDS510PP+. Understand that comes with its own challenges in terms of somehow hacking a parallel port to a PC. I checked online and found a few USB-to-Parallel port converter.

As for the errors:

Nick, as per my reply in my direct message:

You can disregard the PCI error. CCSv3 will install the XDS560 PCI drivers by default. Since most PCs no longer have a standard PCI slot, this error is expected.

The other errors are related to CCS unable to communicate with the XDS510 debug probe. Check the SDConfig tool and see if that can detect the XDS510. If not, then there is some issue with either the XDS510 pod or the XDS510 drivers. Typically support for this is provided by Spectrum Digital but unfortunately they are no longer. Since both the pod and XDS510USB drivers are developed by Spectrum Digital and not TI, we will not be able to assist much in debugging this.

I accidentally hit resolved my issue.

SDConfig is able to connect to the XDS510USB

I was able to find a XDS560 PCI once that arrives I will try this again with a computer with a PCI slot and using that probe.

Do you have alternative drivers for CCS 3.3?

The only XDS560 PCI drivers that come with CCS 3.3 are the ones for the TI XDS560 PCI card:

Any other type of XDS560 PCI card would be from a 3rd party and you would need to go to them for the drivers.

Please note that this PCI card is also very old and unsupported. I'm not 100% sure that it every supported F24x (though if you can configure such a combo in the ccsetup utility then I suppose it may work).

Had more success and was able to connect to the F240 with the TI XDS560 PCI card and dongle.

Trying to use the built in flash programmer on CCS and getting this error.

What next?

Short out some pins on the F240?

CCS Flash plug-in does not work for F240. You need to use Prg2xx.

For this, yes you do need some sort of flash programmer. If the one in CCS doesn't support your device, you will need to find another tool like prg2xx. I don't have any knowledge on this so will not be able to assist much further.

F240 devices, as shipped from the factory have a serial loader in Flash. If this serial loader has not been erased, Flash can be programmed through the serial port.
