TDA4VM: eMMC connection to MMCSD1

Part Number: TDA4VM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMUX1574

Hi Experts,

considering the TDA4VM88TCBALFRQ1, is it possible to connect an eMMC v5.1 to the MMCSD1 pins.

In the TRM (SPRUL1C) paragraph 12.3.6.1 page 2063 it's written that we have 3 MMCSD modules, MMCSD0, MMCSD1, MMCSD2 and each module provides an interface to eMMC.

But in the Datasheet (SPRSP36J) Table 5-1 page 9 for the MMCSD0 it's written eMMC (8 bits), instead of the MMCSD1, MMCSD2 that is written SD/SDIO (4 bits).

Could you confirm that is it possible to connect an eMMC memory (e.g. MTFC8GAMALBH-IT) with 4 bit data to the MMCSD1 pins?

Thanks.

  • Hi Alessandro,

The main difference between MMC0 and MMC1/2 is the PHY layer used (8bit vs 4bit, and optimized for eMMC vs SD speed modes). MMC0 is optimized for eMMC, MMC1 is optimized for SD, and MMC2 is optimized for SDIO.

It is possible to connect a 4bit eMMC to MMC1, but timings in this mode are not supported/guaranteed, especially if higher 1.8V speed modes such as HS200/HS400 are intended to be used.

    Regards,

    Marco

  • Hi Marco,

thanks for the reply. We didn't think to use high speed modes, also because the eMMC memory will be an alternative storage respect to the SD card connected also to the MMC1. We can select eMMC or SD card by using the TMUX1574, but the eMMC memory and the MMC1 will be powered using 3,3V.

    Regards,

    Alessandro.
