I can give a specific answer only with regard to tiarmclang.  Please see the page Using -x Option to Control Input File Interpretation from the tiarmclang online manual.  If your host system is Windows, please understand the file system ignores the difference between upper and lower case letters.  So, those on a Windows system should avoid file extensions like .C and .S.  If you really want to use file extensions like that on Windows, force the behavior you want with the appropriate -x language option.  

As to the GCC compilers, they tend to work in a very similar manner, though the details might be different.

The key thing to understand is the file extension of a header file does not control how it is interpreted.  Instead, the interpretation of a header file is always the same as the file which includes it.

This implies you intend to mix C++ code with C code from the SDK.  That's possible, but there are points of concern.  I don't know whether header files from the SDK are tested and documented to work when included in C++ files.  Please check on that detail.  For general pointers about mixing C++ and C code, please see this FAQ (not from TI).
