[DM36X] AAC License fee ?

I used dm368 and AAC-LC codec.

Recently I was contacted from a company (Via Licensing)

They request for aac license fee

I think that we have paid llicense fee by buy dm36x chip as H.264

Is right ? or we must paid license fee to Via Licensing ?

thank you

  • I'm directing your question to our Business Managers.

  • Each end customer is responsible for paying any associated patent royalties.  For example, MPEG-LA is a licensing body for many of the video codecs.  After a quick Google search it seems that Via is responsible for collecting royalties for AAC.

To give a little bit more history, a few years ago TI used to charge a fee for the codecs themselves.  In addition to paying TI for the software the customer was expected to pay the licensing bodies any IP royalties.  Now for the most part TI has removed any charges, but the fees to the licensing bodies must still be paid by the customer.

I hope that helps clarify.  Sorry to break the news to you that you really do owe them money!  (It's usually not very much though.)
