TDA4VM: Toolchain description in SDK documentation

Hi!

I'm reading through GCC toolchain documentation for TDA4VM here: https://software-dl.ti.com/jacinto7/esd/processor-sdk-linux-jacinto7/latest/exports/docs/linux/Overview/GCC_ToolChain.html.

The second row in the table says "ARM32 CGT for R5F U Boot" but points to aarch32 eabi-hf toolchains meant for Cortex-A. We shouldn't be building for Cortex R5F with GNU-A aarch32 tools. One of those should be incorrect.

Could you please clarify this discrepancy?

R5F is a 32 bit ARM core.

The above is a 32 bit tool chain to build for 32 Bit ARM cores. So R5F SPL/U-Boot can be built using that.

Hi Keerthy -

Probably misunderstood my question. Those tool chains are meant for ARMv7-A processors (or backwards compatibly with v8-A). But R5Fs need toolchains for ARMv7-R. We shouldn't be building for R5F using those tools. Does that make sense?

For 32-bit ARMv7-R (for R5F), the tools are here: https://developer.arm.com/-/media/Files/downloads/gnu-rm/9-2019q4/gcc-arm-none-eabi-9-2019-q4-major-x86_64-linux.tar.bz2.

Thats what I meant by discrepancy here.

I understood your point. gnu-a Vs gnu-rm. In the past we were using the Linaro tool chain which did not have different versions for 32 bit A/R profiles.

We are definitely using the gnu-a for building the R5F SPL in the SDK. I will check internally on the rationale for using the -a version for r5f.

Hi,

Check the U-Boot repo file: arch/arm/Makefile

arch-$(CONFIG_CPU_V7R) =-march=armv7-r

U-Boot is tuning the builds for R cores.

Also for the next SDKs 9.0 releases we will use gcc 11.x. And ARM also has moved to unified toolchain post gcc 11

(Note: GNU Toolchain releases from Arm were published previously as two separate releases - one for A-Profile and the other for R-Profile and M-Profile, (GNU Toolchain for A-profile processors and GNU Arm Embedded Toolchain). Arm GNU Toolchain releases unifies these two into a single release and the previous way of releases therefore have been discontinued. However, the previous releases will continue to be available for reference)
