AM6442: Does the PRU-ICSSG allow Dual stack from R5F?

Genius 3186 points

Part Number: AM6442

Hi

May I have some questions about AM6442 industrial communication stack?

My customer want to use some stacks (e.g. PROFINET + Ethernet/IP ) in 1 x AM6442.

In this topic, Stack use  Full Protocol Stacks from TI.

Q1

Could we use stacks compleatly simultaneously?

e.g. PRU0+R5F0_0 : Ethernet/IP,  PRU1+P5F0_1 : profinet

--

Q2

Could we use some stacks in one R5F core?

e.g. R5F load  Ethernet/IP firmware to PRU0, and load profinet firmware to PRU1.

Thanks,

GR

  • Hi,

Just to confirm before I answer your query, when you mention PRU0/PRU1, you didn't mean ICSS0/1 right?

One ICSS instance consists of more than one PRU core. Most of our device consists of more than one ICSS.

    Thanks,

    JC

  • Hello GR,

I'll let JC handle answering your question. But to clarify the words we are using:

AM64x has two PRU_ICSSG subsystems. Each ICSSG subsystem can support up to 2 networking ports (where the PRU0 / RTU0 / TX_PRU0 cores control one PHY, and PRU1 / RTU1 / TX_PRU1 cores control the other PHY). So if you were using generic Ethernet (NOT the full stack protocols), one AM64x could support up to 4 Ethernet ports controlled by the two PRU_ICSSG subsystems.

If you wanted to use Profinet with a PHY(s) controlled by one PRU_ICSSG subsystem, and then Ethernet/IP with PHY(s) controlled by the other PRU_ICSSG subsystem, I would expect that to be possible (But I am not sure whether the stacks could be run on the same R5F core or not). I am not sure about other configurations.

    Regards,

    Nick

  • Hello Nick-san, JC-san,

    Thanks for supporting.

This is that I want to know.

Just to confirm before I answer your query, when you mention PRU0/PRU1, you didn't mean ICSS0/1 right?

One ICSS instance consists of more than one PRU core. Most of our device consists of more than one ICSS.

    I mean PRU subsystem 1/0.

I understand, that PRU-ICSSG have some PRU core.

    Best regards,

    GR
