Mistral evm3730 android kernel build and pre-built kernels fail to boot

Checking out tools before trying to port android, built the kernel with tools supplied and it crashed after mounting the rootfs from nfs.

Looking up port of RPC 100003/2 on 192.168.208.226
Looking up port of RPC 100005/1 on 192.168.208.226
VFS: Mounted root (nfs filesystem) on device 0:12.
Freeing init memory: 172K
Warning: unable to open an initial console.
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

The kernel from the start_here_android directory  works fine.   Tried the kernels in the pre-built psp directory  ( ti-dvsdk_dm3730-evm_4_00_00_17),

no luck, same as the one I built. I can provide the full boot up logs if it would help.

Any help or insight appreciated.
