SM320C50-EP: SM320C50-EP replacement for TMS320C50 family parts

Part Number: SM320C50-EP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SM320C50

I have a legacy product that uses TMS320C50 family part.  I understand that the SM320C50-EP parts are a replacement for this family.  Can anyone confirm this?

  • Hi John,

Sorry for not looking into this sooner, at a cursory glance it's not clear to me. I'm going to ask a few other experts and see if I can find more details on the SM320C50-EP beyond whats on TI.com.

  • Hi John,

I've gotten more information but need a day to review it & comment.

  • Hi John,

Alright so this is what I can say regarding compatibility:

    • Feature wise it does not appear that the SM version is lacking any features versus the TMS version
    • The pinout is almost identical with the PQ package version of the TMS320C50. The only difference is with a few VSS pins which are grounds for different domains on different packages. If the design uses the same common ground I don't see this as an issue. If there are dedicated ground domains, you may need to assess the feasibility & performance impacts of combining the memory control and inputs/internal logic ground domains together.
    • Most importantly here... we have not done any tests to confirm the SM320C50 would be a drop-in replacement for the TMS320C50 as that was never an intended use case given the price gap between devices. So while a lot of this seems to line up nicely, the only way you'll be able to validate that would be to test it on your own hardware.

Sorry that that is not a definitive answer, but between the age of the devices in question and this unexpected scenario of replacing an industrial part with a space-grade part there I just can't make any guarantees.

  • Thank you for taking the time to provide a thorough evaluation of these two parts.  We have a common ground scheme so that shouldn't be a problem.  The only question I have left is how can we purchase/sample a small quantity (2-5) of the SM320C50PQM66EP device that we can evaluate in our system?  No distributors have any stock.

  • Hi John,

Sorry but I am not able to answer questions regarding stock / purchasing. The E2E forums are for technical support, not supply related queries.
