Following are some questions regarding the use of NAND flash via the AM62A GPMC. The use case is not for booting, but for additional file/data storage. The motivation of these questions is the fit of parallel NAND as better performance than QSPI NAND, and lower density/cost options than eMMC.

So would like to understand performance, and availability of any examples/demos.

- Do any demos exist for GMPC raw NAND?

- If so, please share design details, including NAND manufacturer part number, GPMC config, and any timing related info

- The AM62A TRM has diagrams with 8-bit usage. Please confirm 16-bit is supported as well. Likewise, any demo/support information with 16-bit will be appreciated.

- Any relevant performance benchmark data will be very useful

GPMC NAND is supported on AM64 and AM62 using an GPMC NAND daughtercard that was internally built to enable the feature in SDK. Unfortunately, looks like the board design was not made orderable on ti.com.

We can share those details and point them to the GPMC NAND MCU+ SDK And Linux SDK documentation

The 8 bit GPMC NAND restriction is only applicable for booting from GPMC NAND. GPMC NAND was providing a performance of 16.75 MBps as per a recent debug effort which I believe is lower than the 48 MBps that we saw with OSPI NAND with the AM62A SK LP EVM effort and definitively slower than what you can get with eMMC HS200.

Please note that we don`t support managed GPMC NAND where ECC is handled by the NAND device controller. ALso, our IP is compliant which most of the ONFI 1.0 NAND devices.

Hi Rahul,

For the thread " ALso, our IP is compliant which most of the ONFI 1.0 NAND devices." I'm wondering if it's compliant with other ONFI x.x NAND device? As far as I know. ONFI 1.0 was released some years ago. Currently most of NAND flash will support other ONFI, such as ONFI 5.

I got a recommendation from ISSI. The NAND flash IS35ML01G081 can be used for AM62A7. Can get the DS from the web: Flash Products - Integrated Silicon Solution Inc. (issi.com)

But it can't support ONFI 1.0. and support other ONFI.

How about your opinion?

Could we use IS35ML01G081 as the NAND flash of AM62A7?

Refer the below table that includes 16-bit nand interface configuration.

This section describes the interfacing differences of the GPMC supported memories.

Definitely this is not for booting, but just for file storage. I did not see a table inserted with the 16-bit config.

Also, any thoughts on below question:

I did a quick check internally and understand that this could be used.

The current drivers have been architected around the ONFI standards and the drivers would have to be modified.

This is expected to be a significant effort from customer side and there may not be a lot of support available from TI.
