AM6442: Watchdog Timer Issue on SR2.0 Silicon

Part Number: AM6442
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SK-AM64B

The watchdog timer is working correctly on SR1.0 silicon but is no longer able to reset the board after switching to SR2.0 silicon.

Log below showing the device not resetting at the end of the watchdog countdown. Is there anything different needed for SR2.0 silicon for the watchdog timer?

  • Hello Jason,
    I'm attaching a log file I captured with SDK 8.6 on SK-AM64B (SR2.0 HS-FS).
It looks "RTI_WDT => ESM => SoC RESET" works.
    Best,
    -Hong

  • I’ve verified CTRLMMR_MCU_RST_CTRL register on SR1 and SR2 boards and I can see a difference in the values.

I changed the CTRLMMR_MCU_RST_CTRL register value to 0x00000FFF using devmem tools, watcdoing is working fine.

  • Please find the attached test results. Our board did not fire off the AM64x RTI_WDT.

  • Hello Nagaraj,
    I just tested AM64x SR2.0 (HS-FS) with SDK 8.6 on AM64x EVM.
RTI_WDT works @u-boot as shown from the attached log.
Do we make HW changes on your customer board on RESET circuitry from SR1.0 to SR2.0 SoC?
    Best,

  • Hi Hong,

Let me clarify the problem, we are setting CTRLMMR_MCU_RST_CTRL:MCU_ESM_ERROR_RST_EN_Z to '0' (low active) to enable watchdog (MCU ESM reset). Default value is 0x00020FFF and during R5 boot we are modifying bit#17 to enable MCU_ESM_ERROR_RST_EN_Z bit. This is not working in SR2 silicon. We can be able to modify this register in SR1. Please refer following code.

Note: This value can be modified from A53 or from Linux using devmem tool in SR2. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Also please refer following 3 u-boot commit for more information.

  • Hello Nagaraj,
The log I captured and shared yesterday was on SR 2.0 HS-FS => RTI_WDT timeout => MCU ESM => WarmReset works
I took a closer look at your non-working log => SR2.0 HS-SE on your board.

I tested on SR2.0 HS-SE this morning, and did reproduce the same issue as observed on your board.
    - am64_8.6_rti_wdt_1s_SE_KO.log: the non-working log I captured on SR2.0 HS-SE.

It looks like there's timing constraints on accessing CTRLMMR_MCU_RST_CTRL @0x04518170 by the function enable_mcu_esm_reset() after POR
    git.ti.com/gitweb

I created a WA patch, where enable_mcu_esm_reset() is moved after DDR configurations in R5-SPL.
    - am64_8.6_rti_wdt_1s_SE_OK.log: the working log I captured on SR2.0 HS-SE with the attached patch.

Please test with the WA patch on your board.

    Best,
    -Hong

  • Hello Nagaraj,
thanks for testing the patch. let's close the e2e.

  • Hi Hong,

Is this official patch? if so, I'll apply this patch to our U-boot.

    Regards

    Nagaraj S

  • Hello Nagaraj,
The patch moves mcu esm configurations after DDR configuration in R5-SPL so I don't think any side effect to use it.
I'll create a internal CR to track the issue, and keep you posted for any update...
    Best,
    -Hong
