TMDSIDK572: IDK Board Cannot Boot at 5V 4A Power Supply

Its possible something has damaged the Fuse (F1) and its has a higher resistance than normal.  This might explain the 'slow' ramp to 5V and the quick voltage drop once power is enabled with SW3.  Can you measure the resistance across the Fuse (F1) terminals?

Thanks for responding. As instructed, the measured F1 resistance is 0 ohms and during this measurement, the TP1 voltage is ~800mV lower than the  Vsupply. Adjusting TP1 to be 5V (Vsupply=5.8V), then toggling SW3, the LEDs turn on very shortly as the TP1 drops to 4~4.8V. Seem to me that there might be faulty capacitors or the D2 (TVS).

The voltage drop could be coming from the protection diode (D1) and power supply cable.  Before toggling SW3, is the board pulling lot of current (indicating a board short or failed component)?  With power off, can you measure the resistance between TP1 and GND?  If D2 is faulty, it can be removed (as its there for over-voltage protection only)

Before toggling SW3, the board is not drawing current.

When SW3 toggled, it will quickly draw ~1.3A (this is when the LEDs light up) then shuts-off (not continuing).

Without any power, the TP1-GND resistance measurement settles @ ~60kOhms (note that it is observed dropping resistance which starts at several hundred kOhms).

Did we had similar issues with this product before?

Will TI allow us to have it replaced or repaired by them?

I believe you said this was a new/out of the box board that is failing - or has this board been used/working for some period of time prior to failure?

This is a brand new board and since we got it we have no success in making it boot or at least power it up properly using 5V 4A supply.

Hi Robert, the procurement team is asking:

• whether the shipping back of the old and the sending of the new board will be covered by TI?
• can they fill out the Return Form instead of me then will just provide a link to this forum?

The broken board does not need to be sent back to TI.  Once the return form is completed and approved, TI will provide a replacement EVM.

That's cool . Thanks for this information. I guess I can do the form under my own account and get the information needed from the procurement team then let the replacement board be delivered straight to me.

We have another EVM of the same exact model (bought together) that also have the same issue.

Would it be fine if we request for replacement at once for these two boards?

These boards are tested at manufacturing, so the likely hood of both boards failing new/out of the box with same failure is very very low.  There may be some other handling and/or setup issue.

These boards were unboxed in separate locations (different time) and tried to get started following the same procedure as stated in the reference guide having the same setup.

What could have possibly gone wrong?

In any case, replacement request should be done by the distributor (seller) of the product and needed to be verified as authorized by TI. Is this correct?

Replacement request should be completed by the person to receive the replacement EVM, likely same as the user of the EVM.

All we need to do is get all the purchasing details needed to accomplish this.

Our Product Return (CPR231089962) request was Declined.

They are pushing us to contract Customer Support Service.

This forum link was already highlighted but their reason is about illegitimacy of the request. See the reason below:

"The CPR is sue for TI product FA (Not for EVM). Please contract TI CSC (https://ticsc.service-now.com/csm) for EVM related. Please do not re-submit this CPR again."

I'm checking on this.  I've not had any issue with similar EVM replacements.

EVM-2 S/N: 07204P470048 --> this board somehow stabilizes at 5.8V using up 1.4A at startup (further tests still on-going)

Did you use the link I previously provided, and reference this E2E as proof that TI has confirmed issue with the EVM?  

I did refer this forum. At first it was declined then I re-submit highlighting that this case has been verified in this forum and I gave the link to it in that request. Then they declined it again and told me not to re-submit because this is the case for CSC.

Did you contact CSC (Customer Support Center) as suggested and inform them of the issue, refer to this E2E, and see if they issue a replacement EVM?  Sorry - not had this issue before.

I just contacted CSC through a chat session.. the last agreed topic was that a request for this case will be created and shall contact me via email. I will continue updating this forum for details until resolution.

CSC agent said that the replacement product could not be sent directly to us and shall only be to the address based on the purchase transaction.

Can you help us justify the reason for sending it directly to the end user's address?

Are you not the original purchaser?  I have no knowledge and cannot comment on TI's policies for sending replacement units. 

This product was acquired with the help of a third-party merchant which also have another supplier that did the first-hand transaction with TI (I assume).

I also just thought (as you also indicated above) that the end user shall directly receive the replacement item. Seems there was a misaligned information.

TI's customer service handles the EVM replacement process. I am not involved with that area.  My role here was to confirm the EVM was faulty (which I have), which approves TI customer service to provide replacement.

Indeed, and we appreciate your support and kind assistance. TI-CSC processed the replacement and shipped to the merchant. We let the third party process the reception and sending to our office. The defective board is not needed to be sent back.
